Best of Belize – 2-week itinerary summary

- Day 5 – Head to San Ignacio
- Day 6-7-8-9 – Spend time in San Ignacio

Best of Belize – Detailed 14-day itinerary
Here is the detailed Belize itinerary for the full 14 days you’ll be spending in the country. As always, make this your own – add days in places you like, change it up based on your preferences. Depending on when your flight is on the last day, you may get an extra day to enjoy the last moments in Belize.
Day 1 – Arrive in Belize City and head to Caye Caulker or San Pedro
Your flight will land in Belize’s only international airport: Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport. Most flights arrive in Belize City in the afternoon. This gives you ample time to go through the immigration process, grab your luggage, jump in a cab and head to the ferry. Depending on the number of flights that come in at the same time as you, this whole process may take about 30 minutes to 1.5 hours.
From the airport, you’ll be able to make it onto the boat that heads to Caye Caulker or San Pedro. Know that you should get to the ferry about 30-40 minutes before the boat leaves, so take that into consideration when heading to the ferry. If this is too tight for you, spend the first night in Belize City.
Day 2-3-4 – Spend 3 full days in Caye Caulker or San Pedro
You can also just take it easy and relax. There are plenty of things to do in Caye Caulker, whether you want to go slow or get more active. Same for San Pedro. You’ll find many activity providers that will help you stay active during your time on the islands.
You have 3 full days to spend on the island. Which one you choose to go to, San Pedro or Caye Caulker, is totally up to you! On either island, you have beaches to chill on, or beach bars to hang out in. You can also go on day trips to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve or take other snorkel trips around the reef.
In Caye Caulker, we recommend staying at El Ben Cabanas, while in San Pedro, the newly created The Watermark Belize is a great place to stay.
Day 5 – Head to San Ignacio
Today is a travel day. You’ll need to take the ferry back to Belize City. From San Pedro, the ride will take about 1.5 hours, while from Caye Caulker, it’s about 1 hour. Once you get to the ferry port in Belize City, you can walk 20 minutes to the bus station or take a cab. Taxi rides cost $5 USD per person, or $10 BZD.
There, you can grab a bus that heads to San Ignacio. The bus ride should take about 2.5 hours and will make a few stops along the way. This is a chicken bus, aka old school buses, that have no air conditioning. But it’s still a fun experience to ride with locals.
After this travel day, you can relax at your hotel in San Ignacio, or take some time to walk around. We recommend booking at Cahal Pech Resort in San Ignacio. You can also book your excursions for the next days with them as they have a wonderful tour agency.
Day 6-7-8-9 – Spend 4 days in San Ignacio
Your days in San Ignacio will be busy ones. There is so much to see and to do in and around San Ignacio. We recommend booking these activities ahead of time, as some tend to fill up quite quickly.
The most popular activity in San Ignacio is the ATM cave. It’s a must-do in Belize as it’s a full day of adventure and exploration where you get to explore a cave where artifacts and human remains were found. This is a very active tour and is ideal for people who are in good physical health.
During your other days, you can visit the nearby ruins of Xunantunich or Cahal Pech. You can also visit Caracol, but that is a bit off the beaten path. There is also the Barton Cave Creek, another archeological site.
You can also spend a full day exploring the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve where you can go to the Rio Frio Cave, the Rio On Pools and the Big Rocks Waterfalls. There are also countless hikes and other things to do here.
You can also take it easy and go to the market in San Ignacio, the raptor center or the Iguana conservation project. Don’t forget to spend some time hanging out at the pool at the Cahal Pech Resort, as well as enjoying the sunset from there.
Day 10 – Head to Placencia
Today is another travel day. You can take the bus from San Ignacio to Dangriga, and then switch to take the one heading to Placencia. The bus from San Ignacio to Dangriga is about 2-2.5 hours, and from Dangriga to Placencia is another 1.5 hours.
In Placencia, we recommend staying at the Naia Resort and spa. Although it’s not in Placencia town, they do offer complimentary shuttles 3 times a day, which allows you to explore the town at a leisurely pace.
Day 11-12- Spend 2 days in Placencia
Here, you have 2 full days to explore Placencia. You can spend time chilling on the beach either in town (near the pier is the best one) or at Naia. You can walk along the world’s narrowest street, enjoy ice cream (the battle is on between Tutti Frutti and Bombaz). You can also take a day trip to Laughing bird Caye or Silk Caye for some snorkeling or scuba diving. For your snorkeling or scuba diving trips, we recommend Splash dive Center, one of the best dive shops in Belize.
Day 13 – Head to Belize City
Depending on when your flight leaves on the next day, you can choose to head to Belize City today, or wait until tomorrow. There are plenty of accommodations to choose from in Belize City.
You can also take a flight into Belize City (but we don’t recommend it for the environmental impact of flying). You can offset your carbon emissions, but avoiding flights is best.
If you choose to take the bus, it’s a 1.5-hour bus ride back to Dangriga from Placencia, and another 3 hours bus back to Belize City, so take that into consideration, regardless of when you’re leaving.
Day 14 – Head home
That’s it! Your time in Belize has come to an end. Hopefully, this itinerary gave you enough insight into the country, and you were able to create countless memories here.
3-weeks in Belize to experience the best of the country

Detailed itinerary 14-day Belize Itinerary – Scuba Diver’s Dream
Here are all the details you need to plan your full 2 weeks in Belize while you get the most of the scuba diving sites around the country. As always, we invite you to make this itinerary your own and move the dates around as they best suit your desires and needs.
For this trip, you’ll need to make some extra plans as you’ll need to book your stay with Huracan Dive Lodge and time your travels with their package dates.
Day 1 – Arrive in Belize City and head to Caye Caulker or San Pedro
As we mentioned in the other itineraries, if your flight arrives early enough, you can go directly to Caye Caulker or San Pedro. If not, spend the first night in Belize City and head to your city of choice tomorrow.
If you make it to Caye Caulker or San Pedro before the scuba shops close, you can head out and meet the staff. What we recommend doing is writing to a few shops before your trip to Belize and getting a feel for the people and their prices beforehand. Narrow your choice down to 2-3 shops and go meet them in person once you are in town. Then, you can make the most informed choice before diving with them.
In Caye Caulker, Frenchie’s and Blue Wave had the best reputation, based on conversations we had with some locals and other divers. In San Pedro, Belize Pro Dive Center and Amigos Del Mar had the best reviews.
As always, look into each place, talk to locals and their staff before making your choice. Also make sure you ask all the questions about what’s included in pricing, where they go, the equipment rental, to ensure you have all the information you need.
Days 2-3-4 – Spend 3 days in Caye Caulker or San Pedro
For the next few days, you can head out to explore the local reefs with the shop of your choice. There are many dive sites around both cities. Hol Chan is closer to San Pedro, but many shops head there from Caye Caulker as well.
You can also enjoy the beaches in both places, the laid-back vibes in Caye Caulker and the party scene in San Pedro. Wherever you choose to go, there’s a ton to do when you’re not diving (but also feel free to go slow and do nothing).
Day 5 – Head to Belize City, then to Lighthouse Reef
Today is a travel day. Take the ferry and head to Belize City. It’s time to head to one of the best dive resorts in Belize, and on one of the most remote atolls. We’re going to Huracan Dive Lodge located on Lighthouse reef. This is the same reef where the Great Blue Hole is. You know where we’re going with this!
The boat for Huracan will take you to Long Caye from the Ramada Princess dock. It’s about a 15-minute walk from the ferry dock or a 5-minute taxi drive. Taxis from the ferry will charge you $5 USD per person to take you to the Ramada.
Huracan has 3 different packages, a 3-night, 4-night and 7-night package, which respectively include 5 dives, 8 dives or 15 dives. All packages start on either Saturday or Wednesday, so you’ll need to time your travels with their schedule.
Days 6-7-8 – Spent at Huracan Dive Lodge
For the next 3 days and 4 nights, you’ll be at Huracan Dive Lodge. This is one of the best diving resorts and the best diving experiences we’ve ever had, which is why we highly recommend it!
All your local dive sites will be 2 minutes away by boat. You’ll also get to spend a full day diving at Half Moon Caye, a protected island and marine park. And finally, you will be the first and only boat diving the Great Blue hole. By the time you’re out of the water, the next boats will barely be arriving. These are some serious bucket list activities to check off your Belize adventure.
Staying on Long Caye at the Lighthouse reef is like being on a liveaboard, but without the sea troubles that come with it. This all-inclusive dive package includes 8 dives (3 a day, except the last day, when you’ll have 2 dives), all 4 meals (small breakfast, second breakfast, lunch and dinner) and transportation to and from Belize City to Huracan.
You can read about our full experience at Huracan here, but to sum it up, it was amazing and we highly recommend it!
Day 9 – Head back to Belize City, then go to Placencia
The Huracan team will drop you back off in Belize City. From here, we recommend taking a cab to the bus station. The Huracan team can also take you there for the same price as a cab, which is $5 USD per person or $10 BZD.
There, you’ll need to get a bus to Dangriga, then switch and get to Placencia. The chicken bus will cost you $15 BZD from Belize City to Dangriga, and another $10 BZD from Dangriga to Placencia.
You can also take a shuttle, but it might be quite expensive, as the trip will be about 5-6 hours long. If you’re with a large group, however, it may be worth it to split the cost.
Day 10-11-12 – Spent in Placencia
Placencia is a great place to base yourself if you want to go diving. There are a few local reefs you can visit, but you’re also very close to Laughing Bird Caye and Silk Caye, two protected marine parks.
There are plenty of dive shops in Placencia, but we recommend going with Splash Dive center. The staff is super friendly and qualified, and they’re one of the best shops in town. They head to Laughing Bird Caye every day, and to Silk Caye on certain days. They also have outings to Glover’s Reef and other further atolls.
Day 13 – Head to Belize City
If you’re heading home tomorrow, you should not be diving today (or at least, not diving 24 hours before your flight). You can either hang out in Placencia or make your way to Belize City by bus or shuttle. If you take the bus, you will need to switch in Dangriga.
There is an airport in Placencia, so you can take a flight to Belize City. But as always, as eco-friendly travelers, we don’t recommend taking a flight as it’s very bad for the environment. Consider offsetting your carbon footprint if you do.
Day 14 – Head home
That’s the end of your time in Belize, but with all the scuba diving you did, we’re convinced you had an amazing time!

There you have it! 4 very different but exciting 14-day itineraries for Belize. And you even have the option to make them 3-week trips, if you have more time. But as we mentioned earlier, take these itineraries as rough drafts and make them your own. If you like a place, stay longer. If you don’t, move on.
Either way, Belize is such a beautiful and diverse country that we know you’ll have a great time, no matter where you choose to go.
