We chose to travel for 7 nights and 8 days with Island Expeditions for a very simple reason – access to some of the best parts of Belize without the hassle of trying to plan it all. We not only got to stay in the only accommodations in the Bocawina Rainforest, but we also went camping on Glover’s Reef. These activities would hardly be possible to do with such ease and efficiency without going through an adventure tour operator like Island Expeditions.

So let’s break down the full experience we had for this week-long adventure in Belize.

Overview of our adventure tour in Belize with Island Expeditions

We opted for the Maya Mountains and Glover’s reef option. Before booking, we thought this would be the perfect option of adventure and relaxation, discovery and exploration, mountains and reefs. And we were right!

Over the course of the 7 nights, we got to spend 3 days in the Bocawina Rainforest, and 4 days on Glover’s Reef. The perfect mix of the jungle and tropical paradise. Lush forests and underwater exploration. We couldn’t have asked for a better mix of experiences. We also couldn’t have asked for better staff or better adventure partners. But more on this later.

When you book an adventure tour in Belize with Island Expeditions, you are basically getting an all-inclusive experience, but without all the things you hate about all-inclusive resorts! All your meals are included in the package, all transportation to and from Dangriga, and all the activities, except for scuba diving. If you like, they do arrange that and have some of the best dive sites in Belize. You also get to visit some of the best places and landmarks in Belize. So if you want to take the stress out of planning parts of your Belize Itinerary, this tour might be perfect for you!

Let’s break down the two parts of the Belize adventure tour.

Part 1 – Bocawina Rainforest

The first 3 nights of the Island Expeditions activity tour were spent in Mayflower Bocawina National Park. Here, all three meals were included, but drinks were extra, except for the welcome drink the first night.

We arrived a little before 5 pm, which gave us enough time to settle in then head to the Wild Fig Restaurant, within the Bocawina Rainforest Resort property, just in time for Happy Hour. Here, we met the staff who was going to take care of us during our time there. We were given our agenda for the next day while we sipped our welcome drink and munched on the happy hour snack. We enjoyed our supper with the only other couple who was on this trip with us, and we headed off to our room, to get ready for our big adventure day.

Our schedule in the Bocawina Rainforest Resort was as followed:

• Day 1: Arrive at the Lodge, relax and enjoy supper
• Day 2: Waterfall rappelling & Ziplining. All meals are provided at the Lodge.
• Day 3: A day of activities, including visiting the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, chocolate making and an afternoon of free time. All meals are provided at the Lodge.
• Day 4: Breakfast at the Lodge, and transport to the second part of the trip

Waterfall rappelling at the Bocawina Rainforest

On our first full day at Bocawina, we headed to the adventure center after breakfast. Here we got ready for our waterfall hike and rappelling. We signed our waivers and picked up our equipment to rappel down the waterfall. We then started to hike through the lush Bocawina rainforest, and up the mountain to Antelope Waterfall. Luckily, we had a few fun stops planned along the way.

For this activity, we recommend wearing sturdy hiking shoes, comfy clothes that are light (it gets very humid in the rainforest), bug repellant, and a bathing suit. If you have water shoes, bring them along. And make sure you also have a full reusable water bottle with you.

The hike up to the first waterfall pool will take about 45 minutes, depending on the size of the group you’re with, and the overall fitness level of each person. The first part of the hike, about 25-30 minutes of it, is quite flat, with a small overall ascent. Once you reach the bottom of the waterfall, the steep incline begins. Here, you’ll need to climb up a narrow rocky path – there are ropes around to help you go up,

The hike up to the waterfall pool is luckily not that long – maybe another 20 minutes. But the steep incline, the humidity and the heat make it harder to climb up. The great news is that once you reach the top, you’re rewarded with a beautiful small waterfall and a natural pool. The water is refreshingly cool – the perfect place to take a dip and cool off. This is where having water shoes will help as the floor is rocky and slippery.

After a dip in the pool, we headed to a viewpoint. Here, you have a clear view over the rainforest, as far as the eye can see. It’s really a lovely spot to stop and take a picture. The guide will even offer to take some of you.

Once we were done with the viewpoint, we headed back down to where we had dropped off our gear. It was time to start rappelling down the waterfall. To say that nerves didn’t kick in would be a total lie! We were about to rappel down a 120-foot waterfall and we had never really done anything like this. So yeah, we were nervous, to say the least. But having such qualified guides with us helped, for sure!

One by one, they helped us put our equipment on, explained how to rappel, and down we went. The first few seconds are nerve-wracking, but once you get the hang of it, it’s really fun! The first part of the rappel is very wet… if the guides tell you to go under the waterfall! If not, you’ll be rappelling right next to the waterfall. It’s a refreshing descent!

The second part of the rappel is dry, is much shorter and less inclined than the first. Overall, it’s a really exciting experience. Just don’t forget to take a moment and admire the view behind you. Stop and take a look around. Unless you’re scared of heights! If you don’t like heights, just focus on your hands and you’ll be fine!

Once you’re done rappelling down the waterfall, you’ll take the equipment off and head back to the lodge for lunch. The hike back is about 30 minutes, and mainly flat.

After you arrive back at the Lodge, lunch is waiting for you at the Wild Fig restaurant. You might also have some free time before heading to your second activity of the day.

Zipping down Belize’s longest zipline

The second adventure activity at Bocawina was ziplining. The course we did at Bocawina was a 9-part ziplining trail, which included the ‘Fast and Furious’ – the longest zipline in Belize. It’s half a mile long and you can reach speeds up to 70 miles per hour! How exciting!

We started off at the adventure center. Geared up – harness, helmet, gloves. And off we went into the lush forest. Again, bug spray is a must! Here, tighter clothes might be more comfortable as you need to wear the harness. We also recommend you bring a little backpack with a water bottle (there are water stations in the paths up to the zipline platforms where you can refill your bottle) and bug spray. Truth is the bugs in this rainforest can be vicious!

The activity starts off with a short demonstration, so everyone learns how the guides clip the harness to the zipline, how to stop and slow down, and a few other key concepts. And then, off we go to our first zipline.

The first 2-3 ziplines in Bocawina are quite easy. Short little lines so you learn and practice the concepts you just learned. You have to hike between some platforms, but nothing more than 5 minutes.

The last 3-4 ziplines are amazing. You get an amazing view above the trees, over the canopy, with the golden light all around you. The speed, the views, the thrill, it’s such a unique experience. If you’re an adventure junkie or love to try new and exciting things, ziplining in Belize’s Bocawina rainforest is a must-do activity!

Overall, the zipline course at Bocawina took around 2 hours (again, we were a large group). The course includes 14 platforms and 9 runs. There is over 2 miles of tree time with the longest single run being 2,300 feet – the longest zipline in Belize!

Day 3 at Bocawina – A day of exploration

Our second full day at Bocawina was one that we tailor-made with our host, Ken. He had initially proposed a day at Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, followed by the chocolate factory, and a visit to Hopkins. After discussing with the group, we chose to create our own little itinerary. Know that this is always an option for you as well!

We started off with a hike through Cockscomb Basin – we were hoping to see some jaguars, but no such luck! They are nocturnal animals after all. Instead, we learned about the different trees and animals that call this nature reserve home. We also got to enjoy some birdwatching.

We then headed to a chocolate factory where we learned about the ancient tradition of chocolate making, the various ways it grows, how to consume it and it’s significant health benefits. We even had a chance to grind the chocolate nibs and try chocolate in various forms – from the raw fruit to the dried nibs, crushed and sweetened. It was such a delicious experience! Needless to say, we also stopped by the chocolate store and bought some of the yummy goods they sell. The fan favorite was the traveler bar, similar to a Snickers bars.

In the afternoon, we initially wanted to go river tubing at the jaguar reserve or hike up another waterfall. This was instead of the tour of Hopkins that was proposed to us. However, the weather didn’t really cooperate. Instead, we decided to stay in and enjoy the grounds.

The other couple who was participating loved birdwatching. So the team took them out not only for a night birding experience but also another early in the morning. Basically, if you’re interested in doing a unique experience that is offered at Bocawina, let the staff know and they will do what they can to accommodate!

We loved our stay in the Bocawina rainforest. You often don’t think of the rainforest when you imagine Belize – instead, you think of the pristine turquoise waters. But having a chance not only to explore the rainforest but to really stay in it for a few nights, gave us such a unique perspective!

Accommodations at Bocawina

Bocawina Rainforest Resort is the only accommodation within the Mayflower Bocawina Nature Reserve. This means you have access to the park much before the first people come in. We woke up to the sound of howler monkeys and fell asleep to crickets and the leaves of the trees rustling. You really feel like you’re one with nature!

During our stay at Bocawina Rainforest Resort, we stayed in the Antelope suite. This room had 2 large beds and one full bathroom, as well as plenty of storage and 2 couches. The room was very spacious and comfortable. It was almost too big for two people – it was so nice to be able to stretch out and not feel cramped.

All accommodations here have running water and electricity. You also have wifi available to you pretty much all around the property, but it’s strongest in the rooms and near reception, at the restaurant and lounge area.

Part 2 of our adventure tour in Belize – Glover’s Reef

As much as we loved staying in the rainforest, Glover’s reef was really our jam! Give us remote islands, pristine waters, the chance to scuba dive and tropical vibes and we’re as happy as can be! That’s why Glover’s Reef was such a memorable place for us.

After a 1.5-hour boat ride out from Dangriga, we saw Glover’s Reef atoll appear like a mirage… but in reverse! A beautiful island in the middle of the ocean. Palm trees all around, mangroves sprinkled here and there, and these nice white tents lined up on the beach. We see Steve, our guide for the week, come on the dock to greet us. We’re home for the next 4 nights.

On Glover’s reef, the MO is simple – we do what we want when Mother Nature permits it. We came during an irregular weather pattern, but usually, the weather here is quite amazing. We just got unlucky as we had a few brief storms pass through – but that really didn’t do much to affect our trip. We still got to snorkel, kayak, scuba dive, paddleboard, line fish and chill during our time here.

Every morning, our staff would meet with us and we’d discuss the possibilities for the day. Depending on the weather, we were given a few options to choose from. And whatever we couldn’t do that day, we were able to do in the following ones, so we really didn’t miss out on much. In fact, we got to cram in even more fun things.

Our schedule for our time on Glover’s Reef with Island Expeditions

We’ll start off by saying our time on Glover’s Reef did not go as planned, but that’s ok, because it was still amazing. We mentioned it before, but it’s Mother Nature who has the final say here. So we had to go along with her schedule and make plans around the weather.

Here’s how our schedule went:

• Day 1: We stayed on Tobacco Caye because the weather prevented us from getting to Glover’s Reef. Arrived in the afternoon and chilled out.
• Day 2: Arrive on Glover’s reef, and enjoy some kayaking and snorkeling
• Day 3: Scuba dive in the morning. Hammock surfing in the afternoon. Night snorkel before supper.
• Day 4: Snorkeling in the morning. Line fishing in the afternoon. Kayak trip for sunset. The famous ‘Swamp walk’

All meals and drinks are included on the Glover’s Reef portion of the trip.

Snorkeling in Belize’s Glover’s Reef

The best thing about being in one of the most remote atolls in Belize is that you have access to the best snorkeling in Belize. For fans of the underwater world, there’s nothing better!

The snorkeling sites were never very far from our shores. We sometimes had to kayak out for 5-10 minutes, anchor the boats and swim around a small reef with plenty of fish and beautiful corals. If the weather wasn’t cooperating, we were taken by motorboat to another side of the island that was calmer, and we explored the reefs there.

The team also did a nighttime snorkel trip to explore nocturnal fish in their habitat since the weather during the day wasn’t so great. We didn’t go on this excursion because we’re not fans of night dives, but the rest of the participants loved it.

The snorkeling we did on Glover’s Reef was some of the best we’ve done in Belize and the world. There was plenty of fish to see. The corals were quite healthy and thriving. Our guides were very knowledgeable, going at our pace and pointing out and identifying all the best fish in the area.

Special activities on Glover’s Reef

As we mentioned, the team at Island Expeditions is quite good at accommodating their guests’ requests. We had a diverse group who wanted to do different things, and they were able to make it all happen, despite the weather which was less cooperative. Here are just a few of the examples of things we did.

On one of our days, we were three participants who wanted to go scuba diving, because Glover’s Reef is one of the best places to do it. So the staff arranged for us to go to Off the Wall dive center and do a two-tank dive there. We got to see so many amazing fish, even a dolphin, and marvel at the corals on Long Caye. This was not part of our package, but it was great to know that it was an option for us!

On our last afternoon, we were tasked to catch our supper. Byron, our captain and guide, took us out to some of the best spots to line fish. As a professional fisherman, he taught us how to attach the bait, and catch fish. We ended up catching over 14 fish, perfect for our final feast on the island. And even more perfect because the staff would take home the other fish so they could feed their families!

On our last evening,  just before supper, as a special farewell, we kayaked out to another little island of Glover’s reef. Here we got to watch the sunset and enjoy a few beers together. Steve has been on the island for a few years, so he really knows the best places to go for special little moments!

And on our final night, after supper, we went on what we jokingly called the ‘Swamp walk’. It wasn’t a swamp, but a body of water between the coral rubble and the shore where we walked around looking for nocturnal sea life. We saw about a dozen octopuses, sea urchins, a sea slug and so many other cool night creatures. It was a great way to end our last night on the island!

Overall, even if the weather didn’t fully cooperate, we had an amazing time. The team on the island found ways to make sure we had enough activities to fully enjoy our time on the island, and enough downtime to relax as well. This was truly an unforgettable experience!

Accommodations at Glover’s Reef

The accommodations on Glover’s reef are rustic but very comfortable. All guests stay in canvas tents and share bathrooms, showers, chilling areas and dining areas. The tents are simple and there are two different sizes. Some are for 2 people, while others are larger and can accommodate up to 4 people.  

The dining room is on the second floor of the main building. All meals are shared family-style here. And all are delicious! The bottom floor of this building is where you’ll find some couches, hammocks, and the bar where morning coffee and happy hour are served every day.

The bathroom area is also shared. Here, you’ll find 3 sinks, 2 bathroom stalls with composting toilets, urinals and 2 shower stalls. Although some may find that these are rustic, which to a certain extent, they are, we can assure you that everything is very clean and well-maintained. Being located on what is practically a deserted island hours off the shore, you can’t expect to have a jacuzzi tub to bathe in each night! It might take some getting used to, but because Island Expeditions is a pioneer in eco-friendly tourism, everything is also quite sustainably thought-out.

The Island Expeditions schedule for this adventure trip

Here is a quick breakdown of the itinerary for this trip with Island Expeditions. It’s important to note that even if the team did their best to stick to the schedule, sometimes, Mother Nature has other plans. Our itinerary was probably more different than what usually happens, but out on Glover’s reef, which is about 1.5 hours away from Dangriga by boat, the elements change very quickly – and they are the boss!

High winds and big waves made it impossible for us to get to Glover’s Reef as we were expecting. However, the Island Expeditions team was very responsive and ensured that we were always safe. Even if our itinerary didn’t roll out as planned, we had a great time, and we even got to experience another Island Expeditions property that we had been eyeing!

Just know that the Island Expeditions team is very flexible and can create an agenda based on your needs. For example, some people in our group were very keen on birdwatching, so they got to go out on a night birding excursion in Bocawina, and again in the morning. Your time on Glover’s reef can be spent doing as much or as little as you want. We wanted to go scuba diving, so they arranged that for us. So, feel free to let the staff know what your interests are, and they will do everything possible to accommodate you.

So here’s how a typical trip goes (and we put a few notes for how our trip went).

• Pick-up in Dangriga. It can be from the airport, the bus station, or anywhere else.
• Day 1: Transport to Bocawina park (roughly 30 minutes) – supper is provided on this day
• Day 2: A full day of activities in the Bocawina park – waterfall rappelling and ziplining. All meals are at the Wild Fig restaurant on location.
• Day 3: A day of activities catered to your wishes.
  • We chose to go birding in the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, followed by a visit to the Ch’eil chocolate museum. Lunch at the Wild Fig. Then we wanted to visit another waterfall, but the weather turned on us. All meals are at the Wild Fig restaurant on location.
  • Other options were available to us. We were offered to go visit the town of Hopkins and the local market there, but this didn’t align with our interests. Other people visited the ATM caves (at an extra cost). You can choose to do what you want.
• Day 4: Breakfast at Bocawina. Then, depending on the weather, you’ll head to Glover’s reef, arriving before breakfast. The staff will show you around the grounds and you’ll have a short introduction and initiation to kayaking and snorkeling. This is where you’ll learn how to use the equipment and get acquainted with the procedures at sea. You’ll have lunch and supper on the island. At 5 pm, the bar is open, and it’s happy hour! You’ll have a choice of beer or rum with a few mixers.
  • The weather for our transfer day was not cooperative. Getting to Glover’s was going to be very ‘sporty’ as they say! So instead, we were taken to Tobacco Caye Paradise. This was a welcomed surprise for us all, as we wanted to stay on this site anyway! We got here in the afternoon, after having lunch at Bocawina. We then had the afternoon to relax on Tobacco Caye and enjoy our time in paradise. 
• Day 5: A full day of activities on the island that range from kayaking, snorkeling, paddleboarding or just relaxing. All meals are provided.
  • On this day, we had breakfast at Tobacco Caye and were taken to Glover’s reef. We had the opportunity to kayak and snorkel in the afternoon.
• Day 6: Another full day of activities on Glover’s Reef. Snorkeling, kayaking and more.
  • On this day, we chose to go scuba diving. After breakfast, the team took us out to Long Caye on Glover’s reef, about 15-20 minutes by boat. We did 2 dives at Off the Wall dive center – The Abyss and Long Caye Wall – both great dives. We returned in time for lunch and did another kayak and snorkeling trip around Glover’s reef. At night, some participants went for a night snorkel, but we chose to stay in.
• Day 7: Another full day of snorkeling the best reefs in Belize, kayaking and line fishing.
  • After breakfast, we had a quick discussion in the morning about the atoll and how it was formed, the barrier reef and the corals. It was a very interesting presentation – it was also a way to pass the time as we had a storm passing through. Before lunch, we went for a snorkel on the calmer side of the reef – it was one of the best snorkel sites we have ever seen! Simply amazing. After lunch, we went line fishing to catch the meal for supper for about an hour and spent some time relaxing on shore. We then headed out for a sunset kayak to a beautiful location. And after supper, we took some flashlights and went out to what we jokingly dubbed ‘the swamp walk’ –
• Day 8: We had an early breakfast, packed our bags, said our goodbyes to the staff and headed back to Dangriga. With a packed lunch, nonetheless! It was a bittersweet end to our amazing time with Island Expeditions.

What to pack for your activity tour with Island expeditions

Since we’re traveling long-term, we didn’t pack specific things for our time with Island Expeditions… We regretted some of those choices! In order for you to avoid the same mistakes we made, here’s what we recommend you pack for your trip. We identified what is required per location to make it easier for you.

A quick note about going to Glover’s Reef with your luggage
Because space is limited on Glover’s Reef, Island Expeditions recommends reducing the amount of bags you bring. We packed what we needed into one bag. Obviously, you bring all your valuables with you, but everything else is kept at the Island Expeditions offices in Dangriga.  

• 1 pair hiking shoes (or sturdy running shoes) for Bocawina
• 1 pair water shoes for Bocawina & Glover’s Reef
• 1 pair lightweight quick-dry long pants, ideally loose ones so bugs have a hard time getting to you. Mainly for Bocawina
• Undergarments – enough for your week with Island Expeditions
• 2-3 pairs of socks, ideally ones that dry quickly. Mainly for Bocawina
• 2 pair of quick-dry shorts or skirts. For both locations
• 2 bathing suits, especially if you want to spend most days in the water. Good for both locations
• 3-4 t-shirts depending on how sweaty you tend to get
• 1 long-sleeve shirt, ideally a collar or a hood – mainly to keep the bugs and sun at bay. For both locations
• 1 fleece jacket (this will keep you warm even when wet). For both locations
• 1 good quality rain jacket. For both locations
• A hat
• Sunglasses with band
• A multi-use buff (handy for eco-friendly sun protection)
• 1 headlamp and spare batteries, or your cell phone with a flashlight
• Small (10L) dry bag for a camera, wallet, phone, snacks, etc, for kayaking, or boat trips
• Small day pack for the trips you’ll take
• Mask, fins, and snorkel, if you have them. If not, they can be rented at Glover’s
• A large reusable water bottle
• 1 travel bath towel. For Glover’s only
• Toiletries, personal medication and prescriptions
• Sunscreen – the biodegradable reef-friendly sunblock & soap
• After Bite/Benadryl Cream or lotion to ease itching from bug bites
• Insect repellent (20 – 100% Deet)
• Camera equipment – with waterproofing
• Binoculars if you love birdwatching
• Anti-Nausea medication if susceptible to motion sickness

Overview of our adventure tour with Island Expeditions

Needless to say that we had a great time with Island Expeditions. It was truly amazing to see all that Belize has to offer in one short week. There aren’t that many tour companies in Belize that allow you to see both the lush rainforest and the remote cayes of this beautiful country in a short timeframe.

The fact that you get to live an unforgettable adventure in the rainforest – rappelling down a waterfall and ziplining the longest zipline in Belize, is already pretty amazing. But then, to be able to go out to Glover’s Reef, one of the most remote atolls in Belize, where you’ll be able to snorkel the best reefs and kayak in the coolest places is the cherry on top!

Sure, the adventure portion of the Island Expeditions tour is great, but the experience is so much more than that! It’s about the amazing people you meet on this trip. Not only is the staff beyond nice, but the other participants with who you spend your 7 days, become such good friends too! The laughs we shared, the deep conversations, the amazement at the discoveries we make will stay in our memories forever! This trip would not be the same without all those special people!

We quickly mentioned the staff, but this trip would not be possible or half as fun without them. Each person on the Island Expeditions team goes above and beyond their roles and responsibilities to make each participant feel welcomed, comfortable and happy. They looked out for our safety when Mother Nature didn’t cooperate. They made sure our days were spent doing what would make us happy. They shared a piece of their paradise with us, and for that, and everything else, we’re very grateful!
