In this article, we’ll review the best restaurants in Yerevan. We’ve included something for everyone, from Western Armenian to Eastern Armenian dishes, and other cuisines too. We’ll let you know what the best dishes are, and if they’re vegan-friendly restaurants. Bon appétit!
Food plays a huge role in Armenia. And Yerevan is the mecca of food. In fact, in 2017, National Geographic named Yerevan one of six unexpected cities for foodies. And not much has changed since then.
That’s why we wanted to share the best restaurants in Yerevan with you, including some of the capital’s best breakfast restaurants, vegan-friendly restaurants, cheap places to eat and more!
Food is at the center of life for Armenians.
When people get together, the action happens in the kitchen or dining room. Guests can be found helping hosts prepare their dishes. Dinner parties become huge events where everyone sits and talks for hours while they all enjoy their meal.
However, you may not have the chance to experience this first-hand – unless you get invited into someone’s home, which is likely to happen if you make friends with locals, or if you try Couchsurfing. There are a ton of amazing restaurants where you can taste the best food Armenia has to offer.

What is Armenian food?
There are actually two different types of Armenian food, Eastern and Western. And although there are quite a few similarities between the two, they’re also very distinct.
Eastern Armenian food
Eastern Armenian refers to dishes and flavors that are local to Armenia today.
Typical dishes include khash, a slow-cooked cow’s hoof, eaten with lavash (a paper-thin Armenian bread), garlic, lemon and many shots of vodka (yes, it’s a winter meal to help you warm up).
There’s also khorovats, an Eastern Armenian staple, basically BBQ, but next-level delicious. Finally, there’s khachapuri, which is actually Georgian, and so SO good!
Western Armenian food
Western Armenian food refers to cuisine that was passed down by descendants of Armenians who lived in Western Armenia back in the day (now located in Turkey).
These dishes are typically enjoyed by diasporan Armenians all around the globe. Many of the dishes are what is eaten in the Middle East, falafel, lahmajoun, hummus, etc. These are the same delicious meals we had when we visited Jordan.
Actually, Western Armenian cuisine is now making a comeback in Armenia because of all the diasporans repatriating back to their homeland. It’s also a happy consequence of the very tragic wars happening in Syria, Lebanon and other countries with large Armenian populations.
5 things to know about eating in restaurants in Yerevan
Before we get into all the delicious Armenian food to try, there are a few things you should know about eating out in the restaurants in Yerevan.
1. Smoking in restaurants is now banned in Yerevan
First, some happy news!
As of now, smoking has been banned in all restaurants in Yerevan. Smoking is still a big (bad) habit in Armenia. They start smoking young and keep doing it for a long time.
For the longest time, you would have 2 sections in all restaurants, smoking and non-smoking. While certain restaurants didn’t even have separate sections.
Fortunately, there was a big movement to ban smoking in restaurants, and after many years, the new law has finally been implemented! This is a great win, and a huge stride to get the people of Armenia on a healthier track.
2. You can find great vegan and vegetarian restaurants and meals in Armenia
This is a big preoccupation for us, and we couldn’t be better served than in Armenia.
Although there is a lot of meat and cheese in typical Armenian dishes, there are still a lot of options that are either vegan or vegetarian.
From mains to side dishes, you will find delicious and nutritious options for every dietary restriction you may have.
We do have to warn you, however, that ‘being vegetarian’ or ‘being vegan’ isn’t actually a thing in Armenia. Like many other places, they don’t know what that means.
They don’t consider chicken or fish to be ‘meats’, so you have to be really clear about what you can and cannot eat. And don’t be offended if they don’t quite understand why you would choose not to eat these things.
3. Food and wine culture are huge in Yerevan
You will find a ton of restaurants for every different type of cuisine in Yerevan. And chances are, the food is quite delicious! The ingredients used are fresh, and usually local.
The wine is also next-level. Wine culture has grown so much over the last few years in Armenia. It’s no surprise since the very first wineries, dating back to c. 4100 BC, was found in Armenia a few years back, in 2007.
If you’re looking for amazing wine restaurants, head over to Saryan street, and you can’t go wrong! Also, make sure you’re in Yerevan in early June when they have the very lively Yerevan Wine Days festival.
4. The service is not up to par with the food
One of the things you’ll quickly learn about the hospitality industry in Armenia is that it’s very hit or miss. This applies greatly to restaurants in Yerevan (and around).
You may have impeccable service in the smallest, most random little hole-in-the-wall restaurant, but have terrible service in the best restaurant in the city.
The number of times we’ve sat at a table, waiting for someone to take our order. Or the times we’ve been ghosted when we’ve tried to pay… it’s crazy!
Waiters will rarely ask you if you want to order anything else, or offer desserts. They also aren’t great at offering recommendations. We’ve heard ‘ it depends on what you feel like’ way too many times to count!
The key to ordering in restaurants is that you have to be assertive and sometimes aggressive. Just flag down your waiter, or any staff for that matter. Ask them for what you want, without shame or shyness.
5. Get your food delivered to you if you want to eat in
In Yerevan, you can easily have your food, or pretty much anything, delivered to you directly.
Some of the best apps to use for food delivery are:
- Glovo: One of the main food delivery apps. They have restaurants all over the city where you can order from. Pay cash or enter your credit card details.
- Yandex Eats: Another one of the main food delivery apps. If your restaurant isn’t on Glovo, they are probably here. Pay cash or enter your credit card details.
- Buy.am: This used to be the main food delivery app until Glovo and Yandex Eats took the market over. You can also use this app to order your groceries.
- GG: usually a car hire app, but some restaurants ask you to order a car to pick up the food.
We don’t recommend using these apps too often – the food is always fresher in-house and nothing compares to getting the full restaurant experience!
The 40 best restaurants in Yerevan & Armenia
To help you plan out all the meals you can (and should) eat in Yerevan, we’ve broken our list up for you.

We’ve also made sure to include restaurants in a wide range of budgets and for different tastes.
Our list will cover the best dishes in each restaurant, as well as if they have vegan or vegetarian options.
So let’s dig into it and check out the best food Armenia’s capital has to offer
The 5 best breakfast restaurants in Yerevan
We love breakfast! All the time! In fact, one of Derek’s favorite things is having breakfast for supper.
So it’s no surprise that we would wake up every morning during our time in Armenia and try a different breakfast place in Yerevan.
We discovered a bunch of amazing restaurants and these are the 5 best breakfast restaurants we found that we adore. We highly recommend you give them a try.
1. Abovyan 12 (aka Dalan): Best breakfast restaurant with a beautiful setting
Don’t be fooled by the entrance of Dalan. As soon as you step into the gift shop, you’ll be mesmerized by everything you see around you. But when you make your way toward the back of the shop, the scent of Armenian Jazzve coffee will take a hold of you. You’ll be taken to the cutest garden, with an old truck attached to a piano at the center of it. Vine leaves will create a perfect little roof for you, letting the sun rays dance through on the tables below.
We loved stopping here for coffee, fresh fruits, bread, spreads, and cheeses. A typical Armenian breakfast to get you started for a day of exploring.
- Location: Abovyan 12 is located on Abovyan street, near the Charles Aznavour Square. Find them here.
- Check out their website or Facebook page
- Budget: $$
- Smoking is permitted here because the restaurant is located outside.
- Vegetarian options available. No substantial vegan options.
2. The Green Bean coffee shop: where to eat an organic breakfast in Yerevan
We were lucky enough to live a block away from this café when we were in Yerevan, and we loved it. They offer a great variety of coffees, teas, and drinks (homemade compote, as they call it). They roast their coffee in-house and serve quality organic food. The owners are really keen on promoting green and health-conscious living practices in the community, and we love them for it!
The Green bean is a great breakfast place in Yerevan. They have tons of classic western breakfast foods and some Armenian typical meals as well. Plus, the atmosphere is really chill if you need to get some work done or catch up with friends.
A few of the other perks they offer are the socially responsible souvenirs they sell. And best of all, this is one of the non-smoking restaurants in Yerevan.
Derek’s favorite thing to eat here was their cloud egg. Light, fluffy and delicious, you can’t ask for more for breakfast. While I always went in for their mint lemonade to-go (in my reusable bottle, of course!)
- Location: There is now only 1 The Green Bean locatios in Yerevan. It’s at the foot of Cascade. Find them here.
- Check out their Facebook page
- Budget: $-$$
- Vegan & vegetarian options available
3. Crumbs Bread Factory: Best place to eat homemade bread and pastries
Crumbs Bread Factory has 3 locations in Yerevan, but our favorite is the one on Mashtots, right near Yerevan’s Opera House and in front of Saryan Park (where artists sell their works of art). This bakery and cafe has everything you need for breakfast or lunch, from fresh-baked bread, pastries, delicious salads, healthy sandwiches and more!
The atmosphere here is really chill, making it another great place to hang out with friends or get some work done. There are also a ton of vegetarian and vegan options to choose from on their menu. Plus, it’s another non-smoking restaurant in Yerevan, which is always great to find!
Our favorite meals here were the mushroom and vegetable sandwiches, and their salads (pick one, they’re all awesome). For breakfast, pick anything fresh out of the oven, from the croissants to the many breads. Derek’s favorite here was the BELT sandwich… are you even surprised?!
- Location: There is now only 1 Crumbs location in Yerevan, on Mashtots. Check them out here.
- Check out their website or Facebook page
- Budget: $$
- Vegan and vegetarian options available
4. Baron, amazing Western Armenian breakfast food in Yerevan
Baron is a recent discovery and if you grew up in the diaspora like Carine, it’s what your mom’s cooking tastes like!
The restaurant offers a variety of dishes from Lebanese, Mediterranean, Arabic, and Middle Eastern cuisines.
They have a special breakfast menu and another one for lunch and dinner. And having tried this restaurant at all hours, we can confirm that everything is delicious.
You can easily find vegan and vegetarian options here, as well as halal dishes.
We thoroughly enjoyed their breakfast mezze, their foul, falafel and all their typical Middle-Eastern dips – Hummus, muhamara, baba ghanouj and more! Also give their lentil kofta a try and any of their salads – they’re all fresh and delicious.
If you’re looking for a restaurant that caters to all palettes and dietary restrictions, this is the place for you!
- Location: Located on a quiet street in the center of Yerevan. Find Baron here.
- Check out their menu on their Facebook page
- Budget: $-$$
- Vegan and vegetarian options available
5. Tsitron, the perfect breakfast restaurant in Yerevan
Tsitron quickly became one of Derek’s favorite restaurants for a very specific reason – their Dzufins.
If you’re a fan of Egg McMuffins, this is where you can find the closest dish to it – the Dzuffin. An English muffin sandwich stuffed with egg, bacon and cheese. Everything you need to make Derek happy!
Although small, the restaurant offers a variety of delicious meals. They even have vegan options. Most of their dishes are Middle Eastern.
We loved their hummus, which you can also take to go. Try their kunjut bread with all the toppings. Their zaatar is also delicious. The only thing we would tell you to skip out on are their french fries – they are not fresh and we’ve been disappointed each time we’ve tried them.
They have a ton of other dishes to enjoy, from baked goods to sandwiches and zaatar breads.
For good cheap eats, this is a great place to come for breakfast in Yerevan.
- Location: Tsitron recently moved to a new location near the AUA. Find them here.
- Check out their menu on their Facebook page
- Budget: $
- Vegan and vegetarian options available
The 8 best restaurants for dinner & drinks in Yerevan
We mentioned it before, and we’ll say it again because we don’t want you to miss out on one of the best things about Armenia. The food is one thing, but wine and drinks are huge here.
And they are only growing further. So make sure you try as many great Armenian wines as possible. And these are the best places to enjoy them!
1. Dargett: Best craft beer – Where to drink in Yerevan
Although the wine scene is huge in Armenia, the beer scene is slowly growing. Dargett has beat its competitors, being the first craft brewery in Yerevan, serving over 15 types of craft beer, expertly created with high-quality ingredients. We wouldn’t be surprised if more microbreweries popped up around the city soon! Best of all, you can find their beer in many Yerevan restaurants.
We loved coming to Dargett for a tall glass of beer and some snacks. We would always try a different beer from this microbrewery to try and find our perfect fit. And with seasonal brews always being added, we had to constantly go back! So the verdict is still out on what our favorite is, though the Apricot Ale is for sure up on the list!
On top of delicious brews, their menu was really fun too. Derek loved the pulled pork sandwich. And although there aren’t a ton of vegan or vegetarian options, we always found something to snack on.
When the weather permits, we recommend you take a seat on their beautiful terrasse. The street isn’t that busy and the vibe is just perfect! You should note that Dargett can get very crowded, especially on the weekends. If you’re a big group, be sure to reserve a table in advance.
- Location: Located right by Eat & Fit, Dargett is on the popular Aram street. Find them here.
- Check out their Website or Facebook page
- Budget: $$
- Vegetarian options available. Vegan options can be arranged.
2. Beatles Pub, the perfect place for food, drinks and a good time in Yerevan
Beatles is an iconic pub in Yerevan. And surprisingly, they offer some great food.
If you plan on going on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday, we would recommend calling a few days ahead of time to make a reservation.
For drinks, Beatles Pub has an extensive offering. As for food, Derek swears that the BBQ ribs here are some of the best he’s ever had – anywhere in the world!
The music is loud, the atmosphere is friendly and fun, the vibes are always good at Beatles. It’s a great place to start your evening of partying or end your night after hitting the other party spots.
Beatles Pub is a great place to experience some of Yerevan’s legendary party culture.
- Location: Beatles is located next to another iconic party spot, Calumet. Find them here.
- Check out their menu here
- Budget: $
- A few vegan and vegetarian options available (but limited offering)
3. Wine Republic: Best restaurant for amazing wine and food pairings
Wine Republic started out as a wine restaurant, but it got so popular that they opened an Asian restaurant to fulfill the demand (the punny ThaiWine).
You can now enjoy either Italian or South-East Asian food, both paired beautifully with a nice glass of Armenian wine. What more could you ask for?!
Because we didn’t have enough of it in Thailand, we would highly recommend their Pad Thai with a glass of white Koor. Their truffle tagliatelle is also out of this world if you love truffles as we do!
- Location: Just at the foot of Cascade, Wine Republic is located here.
- Check out their Facebook page
- Budget: $$-$$$
- Vegan & Vegetarian options available
4. Tapastan: Where to eat in Yerevan if you want to share a meal with friends
We had such a good time at Tapastan every single time we went. With outdoor seating, delicious food to share and a great drink menu, how could we not!?
Located on the hip Sarayan street where you find all the cool bars and restaurants, Tapastan has quickly become a staple for groups of friends who want to go enjoy delicious meals they can share in a fun atmosphere.
We’d love to tell you what to order here, but we can’t decide on one dish. Everything we shared here was delicious. The best thing about this restaurant is that they have plenty of vegan and vegetarian options to choose from. And if you ask nicely, they will even make a traditional dish veg-friendly for you!
- Location: 6 Martiros Saryan street in Yerevan. Find them here.
- Check out their Facebook page
- Budget: $$
- Smoking is not permitted inside but is on their outdoor tables
- Vegetarian & Vegan options available
5. In Vino: The first wine bar in the city – where to eat and drink in Yerevan
This is the perfect spot for anyone who loves wine, cheese, and people-watching… basically, this place was made for you (and us!).
In Vino is the first wine bar to open in Yerevan, and since, many have followed suit. Don’t be surprised then, that you often have to reserve a table before going. This Yerevan restaurant is often full!
We can totally understand why – the staff is always so friendly and accommodating. This will always help you find the right wine for your palette and wallet! As for food, their cheese platter is delish, with tons of local cheeses.
They have seating inside and outside, but as always, we recommend you grab a seat on the sidewalk, to enjoy the beautiful weather and to people-watch.
- Location: Right next to Tapastan, find them here.
- Check out their Facebook page
- Budget: $$
- Vegetarian options available
6. Sherep: The best restaurant with live music in Yerevan
If you’re looking for an amazing restaurant and dance-all-night live music, Sherep is the place for you. Although it is a bit more expensive than its sister restaurant Lavash, it’s well worth it, especially if you’re looking to celebrate a special evening. Just make sure you reserve ahead of time as they are often full.
The restaurant has two sections, smoking and non-smoking, though, to be honest, you do smell the smoke everywhere, which wasn’t our favorite. However, the delicious food makes up for it. Plus, the live band creates such a fun atmosphere, so don’t be surprised to see couples get up and dance every once in a while.
The service is always top-notch, and the food is up there too! All their salads and breads are out of this world. And if you want to try Derek’s favorite dish, go for the pear and blue cheese risotto. Go ahead and give any of their dishes a try – the presentation will blow you away and so will the taste!
- Location: Located right at Republic Square. Find them here.
- Check out their Facebook page (or their website which may still be under construction)
- Budget: $$$
- Vegan & Vegetarian options available
7. Sirelis, for a night of amazing dinner and live music
One of our deal friends living in Yerevan invited us out to Sirelis. We should have known that this was going to be an absolute treat because she has impeccable taste!
Sirelis quickly became one of our favorite restaurants for delicious food, lively atmosphere, and dinner with a live band.
Every single dish we’ve tried here has been amazing. Our biggest recommendation is to visit this restaurant with friends, so you can order as many dishes as possible and try a bit of everything.
Their BBQ meats (khorovats) are delicious. Their tarragon salad is so refreshing. They offer a Georgian bean dish that is spicy and delightful. Their cocktails are amazing. Honestly, we have loved every dish we’ve tried there.
What makes Sirelis even more fun is the live music. From traditional Armenian songs to crooner music, they offer a bit of everything, depending on the night.
If you have a reason to celebrate, big or small, this is the place to go. It’s one of the best restaurants in Yerevan!
- Location: Sirelis is located on a busy cross-street. We recommend walking to get to the restaurant. Find them here
- Check out their menu on their Facebook page
- Budget: $$-$$$
- Vegan and vegetarian options available
8. Tavern Yerevan, Authentic Armenian cuisine in a lively atmosphere
Yerevan Tavern is not your typical restaurant. It’s where you can live the Armenian experience fully!
Here, you will find delicious Eastern Armenian classics, live music on many nights, private rooms and hopefully, a new friend in your waiter!
We had an amazing time visiting Yerevan Tavern. We went with a friend, and our food order was plenty – again, we recommend going as a group to sample as many dishes as possible.
Everything we had on the menu was delicious. From the fresh salads to the fried foods to the compote (natural fruit juice), breads and beyond.
We know we got lucky because our waiter was outstanding. He made some great recommendations and helped us choose some delicious vegan options. We got along so well that we exchanged phone numbers – he wanted to take us out for khash, a famous hoof soup in Armenia.
If you’re looking to have a fun night of partying, enjoying delightful food, add Yerevan Tavern to your list. They have a few locations around the city.
- Location: There are 5 different Yerevan Tavern (Pandok Yerevan) locations in the city. Amiryan Street location. Khorenatsi Location. Paronyan location. Teryan location. Riverside location.
- Check out their menu on their website
- Budget: $$
- Vegan and vegetarian options available
The 6 best cheap restaurants in Yerevan
Armenia and Yerevan are really great budget destinations for travelers. Basically, look for anywhere you can find lahmajoun (Armenian pizza), or zaatar bread. They will offer a satisfying meal at a fraction of the price.
So if you’re looking to pinch pennies a little bit more, here are the 6 best cheap restaurants in Yerevan.
1. Elie’s Lahmajun: Best restaurant for the delicious wraps in town
Not far from Za’atar Pizza, you will find Elie’s Lahmajun. Often, when one is too busy, we’ll head to the other. Though to be very honest, we much prefer the service at Elie’s. The staff is always super nice and courteous.
We love Elie’s for their lahmajoun, but also, for their spinach pie, and their many vegan options. For example, even if it’s not on the menu, they were nice enough to whip up a vegan mushroom lahmajoun for us. And they can customize pretty much any order to your liking.
Sure, the place is a no-frills restaurant. Don’t expect fancy tables and chairs. But the food is cheap, the service is fast and courteous and the location is convenient.
- Location: Located right here
- Check out their Facebook page
- Budget: $
- Vegetarian & vegan options available
2. Ost: Best place to eat affordable khachapuri
Another hole-in-the-wall restaurant that was around the corner from our Yerevan apartment, Ost is a local’s hangout. The food is quick and cheap, but really good, considering.
To be honest, we would always order the same thing from this cheap restaurant in Yerevan. We’d go for a Georgian classic, Adjarian Khachapuri, which is basically cheese and egg cooked in a dough pocket.
This was our favorite dish to have in the morning for breakfast, or as an afternoon snack.
- Location: They are located near Amiryan, on Mashtots. Find them here.
- Budget: $
- Vegetarian & vegan options available
3. Lahmajun Gaidz: Best restaurant for cheap and delicious lahmajoun
Lahmajun Gaidz is a classic with locals and repats alike. Run by a mother-son duo, this Syrian-Armenian restaurant is as good as any lahmajoun place can get!
They have a ton of variations of lahmajoun, known as Armenian pizza in most of the world. Though to be honest, no one can be sure where this dish is actually from as it’s found in most of the Middle East.
You can get the classic lahmajoun, Derek’s favorite, or you can opt for a vegan delight, za’atar pizza. Either way, everything is delicious here, so go nuts and try all their variations of this Armenian pizza! Enjoy!
- Location: Near the Vernissage market, Gaidz is here
- Here’s their Facebook page
- Budget: $
- Vegetarian & vegan options available
4. Zatar Pizza: The best za’atar pizza and salads
Another hole-in-the-wall restaurant with a large terrasse on the sidewalk where you can eat super well, for a few dollars.
When it comes to these types of restaurants, you can’t really go wrong. The food is delicious, cheap and perfect for sharing. Grab yourself a few lahmajoun pizzas if you want meat or a za’atar pizza if you’re looking for a vegan treat. Make sure you fill them with hummus or labneh, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, and spicy peppers if you can handle the heat. Then, grab some hummus, salads and share it all with your friends. This is the best way to enjoy any meal in Armenia.
At Zatar Pizza, our favorite cheap meal was a zatar pizza with the fatoush salad. We know we said it for a few places, but when the ingredients are so fresh, locally grown and tasty, everything made with them is just as delicious.
- Location: Located on the corner of Hanrapetutyan, find them here.
- Check out their Facebook page
- Budget: $
- Vegetarian & vegan options available
5. Lebanon Shawarma/Chez Vicken: Best cheap food to go
Another tiny restaurant with delicious food. We recommend Lebanon Shawarma / Chez Vicken for a quick and cheap meal on the go. Although seating is limited here, they do have a few booths inside and a few tables outside, if you want to enjoy your wrap at the restaurant.
For a few weeks, we lived right across the street from Chez Vicken. We would always grab a few wraps before setting out on one of our many day trips around Yerevan.
Derek loved the Mexican wrap that had a bit more kick to it, while Carine’s favorite was the za’atar pizza wrap filled with all sorts of veggies. And as we mentioned, we loved getting some salads to share as well.
Best of all, Chez Vicken is open 24hr a day, which means you can enjoy it at all hours of the morning if you decide to test out the nightlife in Yerevan, which we highly suggest you do!
- Location: The restaurant is located on the famous Tumanyan street. Find them here.
- Check out their Facebook page
- Budget: $
- Vegetarian & vegan options available
6. Falafel food court, cheap eats at the foot of Cascade
If you’re out exploring the best cheap things to do in Yerevan and you end up near Cascade, head to Falafel Food court (previously known as Al Darwany).
Under new management, but with the same delicious food, Falafel Food Court has it all. You can order your dish as you want, or you can grab something at their buffet.
Derek is a big fan of their lahmajoon, and I love their falafel sandwich. Make it vegan by requesting hummus instead of the garlic sauce.
Their zaatar bread is also tasty, as is their chicken shawarma.
We can really be creatures of habit, so we always order the same thing when we visit this restaurant. The staff even knows our order before we say it!
For a quick and cheap meal, Falafel Food Court is one of the best restaurants in the city.
- Location: Falafel food court is located steps away from Casacade. Find them here
- Budget: $
- Vegan and vegetarian options available
7. Mer Taghe: Best restaurant for local and Western Armenian food
Mer Taghe, or Our Neighborhood in Armenian, is a bit more of an expensive place, but well worth every penny!
The place gets so busy, especially on hot summer nights when their sidewalk seating is full to the brim. They are known for their lahmajoun and zaatar bread. They also have some delicious meat manti, if you’re in the mood for something more substantial.
This quickly became one of Derek’s favorite restaurants in the city. He became such a repeat customer that the staff knew him by name, and knew his order before he placed it.
If you’re looking for delicious but cheap food in Yerevan, this is a must.
- Location: 21/1 Tumanyan St, in Yerevan
- Check out their Facebook page
- Budget: $$$
- Vegan and vegetarian options available
8 must-try restaurants in Yerevan
These restaurants didn’t make the list but we would eat here on the regs. We highly recommend you give them a try as well.
1. Lavash: Best restaurant for amazing food and a great atmosphere
There’s a reason Lavash is constantly the #1 best-rated restaurant on Tripadvisor. From the outside, it may seem like a touristy restaurant, everything we ever ordered here was always delicious.
In true Armenian fashion, we would share our appetizers and mains; pumpkin soup, salads, dolma with cabbage, the meat and cheese platter, the homemade bread, and basically whatever the staff would recommend for us.
The waiters were always super friendly, and another added bonus is that they all understood English! The prices are a bit higher than in other restaurants, but the portions are large, and the food is amazing. Lavash is a sister restaurant of Sherep, so you can expect to eat similar foods, but for less.
- Location: 21 Tumanyan Street in Yerevan
- Check out their Facebook page
- Budget: $$
- Vegan and vegetarian options available
2. Dolmama: Best classic Eastern Armenian food in Yerevan
We took Carine’s parents here one of the first nights they joined us in Armenia. If you want to have a fancy night out with delicious food and wine, be sure to make a reservation at Dolmama.
Just looking at the roster of celebrities who have eaten at Dolmama will confirm that you’re in for a treat. It has such a warm and homey atmosphere, especially in their back terrasse. It’s the type of place you could eat, talk and sip wine for hours.
We ordered and shared the salads, dolmas, Ishkhan trout carpaccio, the rolled eggplant with cheese, the mulberry khorovats, and whatever the waiter recommended.
We won’t hide it, this restaurant is more upscale and expensive than most restaurants in Yerevan. Anthony Bourdain ate here and so did the Kardashians, so you know what to expect! But if you’re looking to celebrate something special, this is the place for you!
- Location: 10 Pushkin Street in Yerevan
- Check out their Facebook page
- Budget: $$$
- Vegan and vegetarian options available
3. Lusik Aguletsi Museum House, an iconic restaurant in Yerevan
Lusik Aguletsi is an Armenian icon. One friend in Mexico compared her to Frida Khalo, and she is absolutely on the same level!
A prominent artist and conservationist, Lusik Aguletsi was one of the last people in Armenia to wear the traditional daraz. She worked hard to preserve Armenian culture as she had to flea Azerbaijan at a young age.
Today, you can visit her home-turned-museum in one of Yerevan’s boroughs. They offer tours of her home, and then, you can sit and enjoy a meal or a drink in her restaurant.
The food here is delicious. And the vibes are so special. The café-restaurant is located in the garden, surrounded by more art.
We absolutely enjoyed every dish we had here. We shared a crispy eggplant salad, Derek had a mushroom risotto, I enjoyed a Garni Yarakh.
For dessert, Derek always orders the Gata which is quite delicious here. Carine tried the Pokhindz – a sweet-ish dish made with wheat flour. It was just okay.
On certain nights, there are live performances at the café-restaurant. Make sure you check their schedule to catch a show while you enjoy your meal.
You could spend hours at the Lusik Aguletsi house-museum. We recommend making a little day-trip out of it. Come and enjoy the tour of the museum before having supper at the restaurant.
- Location: Lusik Aguletsi is best reached by GG, or by taking the metro to Sassountsi Davit station. Find them here
- Check out their menu on their Facebook page
- Budget: $$

4. Derian restaurant: Best restaurant for Near Eastern cuisine in Yerevan
Not too long ago, it was quite hard to find good authentic Western Armenian and Near Eastern food in Yerevan. Derian was one of the first restaurants to offer this in the city.
On weekends, expect to enjoy a delicious meal with live music playing (we’d say in the background, but it does get a little loud and rowdy, but what party doesn’t).
We love to promote vegan and vegetarian eating, but if you want to have the city’s best chee kufta, this is the place to do it!
Chee kufta is an Armenian staple. It’s like beef tartare, but not as chunky, and a bit spicier. It’s beef that’s minced and mixed with bulghur, topped with parsley, tomatoes, and cucumber.
They do have some vegetarian and vegan options as well.
If you’re looking for some delicious Middle Eastern food, Derian is still a top choice after all these years.
- Location: 1/3 Buzand Street in Yerevan
- Check out their Facebook page
- Budget: $$
- Vegan and vegetarian options available
5. Mayrig, one of the top-rated restaurants in Yerevan
Since it’s opening, Mayrig has become one of the iconic restaurants in Yerevan that you have to try.
A mix of traditional Armenian dishes and middle-eastern plates, this restaurant is owned and operated by Alin Kamakyan. The dishes are prepared according to her grandmother’s recipes who migrated to Lebanon from Musaler.
Alin opened the first “Mayrig” restaurant in Beirut in 2003. Since, she’s founded “Mayrig” in the Maldives, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, and later in Yerevan.
You can’t go wrong with anything their menu. Everything is delicious, from the dips to the main course and desserts.
This is another restaurant where you should visit with friends. Sharing is caring and being able to share as many dishes as possible is key!
Some of the dishes we loved are their manti (vegan-friendly version available), their muhamara, their fattoush and olive salads, the khorovats… and their gata for dessert.
Another great place to celebrate any occasion, big or small! Add this restaurant to your list of must-trys in Yerevan.
- Location: Mayrig is located steps away from Republic Square. Find them here
- Check out their menu on their Facebook page
- Budget: $$$
- Vegan and vegetarian options available
6. Machar 44, amazing food in Yerevan and an even better mission
Machar is a beautiful restaurant and bar in the heart of Yerevan, not too far from Cascade. And although the food and the setting are amazing, what makes this restaurant special is the people who work there.
Machar 44 has made it a mission to help the displaced people from Artsakh. In fact, the majority of its workers are from Artsakh. And for us, just that is a reason to visit! (And tip them, and leave a positive review on the different sites).
We didn’t know about Machar until our friend invited us there for her birthday. And we finally understood what the hype was about.
The food was amazing. And even if they had a fixed menu for the event, they made it a point to let Carine know all the vegan options and even modified the menu for her. The staff was attentive and so sweet! Not always a given in the hospitality industry in Armenia!
They also have a great little bar downstairs, where they can make all sorts of amazing drinks.
For elevated Armenian cuisine, with attentive service, you can’t go wrong with Machar 44.
- Location: Machar 44 is located on Spendiaryan street. Find them here
- Check out their menu on their Facebook page
- Budget: $$
- Vegan and vegetarian options available
7. Ktoor, one of Yerevan’s most delicious restaurants
Located on Yerevan’s bar and restaurant street – Saryan, and the edge of the historic Kond district, Ktoor is where you can enjoy Yerevan cuisine with a modern twist.
The space is beautifully decorated. In the summer months, we recommend sitting outside to enjoy their patio. And start off with a drink – they have a lovely cocktail menu.
Now, for the good stuff. The food!
You can find many traditional Armenian dishes at Ktoor, but dusted off and presented with modern flavors. Think of Pasuts Dolma (lenten dolma), arishta, and khorovats.
They also have plenty of Middle Eastern dishes like their hummus & dips, iman bayaldi (eggplant in tomato sauce) and lahmajoon.
This is another Yerevan restaurant we recommend visiting with friends and family. Not only for the lively atmosphere but also for their signature mi ktoor dish.
Ktoor means Under the roof. And their Ktoor signature dish is exactly that. A soft bread filled with grilled meats and vegetables. They flambé the bread, then slice it open to reveal the delicious food inside.
A spectacle to experience!
For traditional Armenian dishes, Ktoor is the place to go. However, in true Armenian restaurant fashion, we can’t say the service is great here. Each time, we’ve had to hunt down our waiter to get any kind of service.
- Location: Ktoor is located on Sayran street. Find them here
- Check out their menu on their Facebook page
- Budget: $$
- Vegan and vegetarian options available
8. Katsin, a new must-try restaurant for drinks and dinner
Despite a raging global pandemic, Katsin opened its doors in 2020 and it’s quickly become one of the coolest places in town for dinner, drinks, and dancing!
Not only is the place beautifully decorated, but it also has a fantastic menu, especially for those who love their surf and turf. It’s the perfect place for a date night, to celebrate a special occasion, or to have amazing food in a fun atmosphere!
Katsin’s space is huge and absolutely beautiful. There are two floors to the restaurant, an extensive menu, wine selection, and a very well-manned DJ booth.
Expect to party on most Friday and Saturday nights, but hey. This is Yerevan, so expect a party any night of the week! But be warned, the music is quite loud, so it’s not the best place for intimate conversations.
As for the menu, it’s hard to go wrong. The staff can point you in the right direction based on what is fresh that evening.
They’re also quite accommodating and turned some of their vegetarian dishes vegan for Carine. As for the rest of the party, they raved about their filet mignon, the tartars, and everything else. Honestly, there were no complaints that night!
Reservations are encouraged. Katsin does tend to get quite busy. And we don’t blame them! This will be one of your favorite restaurants for dinner and drinks in Yerevan.
- Location: Located right off Amiryan street, at 4/6 Amiryan, next to Mayrig.
- Check out their Facebook page
- Budget: $$$
- Vegetarian options available. Dishes can be made to accommodate vegans.
Where to eat in Yerevan – Top 5 vegan-friendly & vegan restaurants
We mentioned it before and we’ll say it again. Finding vegan and plant-based food is readily available in Armenia and all around Yerevan.
Many Armenian and Middle Eastern meals are accidentally vegan, which is wonderful.
However, don’t be surprised if the locals don’t understand your convictions – although plant-based meals are a staple in every Armenian home, the vegan mentality is far from being understood.
But slowly and surely, more vegan meals and restaurants are popping up in Yerevan.
Since we last visited, we’ve had to modify this list quite a lot. Many of our favorite places have either closed or are no longer operating. However, luckily, quite a few new places have opened up and they are amazing.
Here are 5 of the best we found.
Looking to reduce the amount of meat you eat? Check out our articles on how to go vegetarian or vegan. We also have an article to help you travel while plant-based. They’re all full of great tips to help you out.
1. 2022 Place, for amazing vegan food in Yerevan that will impress anyone
2022 Place is our top discovery of this year! It’s so good, that even non-vegans will adore the food here. We loved it so much, we would go back every 10-14 days.
The best way to describe 2022 Place is a hole-in-the-wall. It’s unassuming as a spot, but the food is beyond delicious.
They offer all sorts of different cuisines, Russian, Japanese, German but always with an Armenian twist. And although they have items on their menu that are staples, many of their dishes change with the seasons and with what is available in nature.
The restaurant opened in 2022, as Ilya Devedzhian fled the war in Russia. Along with 2 partners, Marika and Karlen, this restaurant has quickly become a favorite for plant-based people in the city, and those who want to try something different.
We’ll warn you – the seating in 2022 Place is not comfortable. But the food is totally worth the temporary butt pain you’ll experience!
Some of our favorite dishes are the onigirazu (take your pic, both are delicious), the arishta ramen soup, the bahn mi, the fried sushi…honestly, we have loved every dish we’ve had.
And don’t get us started on their desserts. It’s not easy finding vegan desserts in Yerevan that are delicious and affordable. But 2022 Place has a rotation of desserts that vary with the seasons.
Other things we love about 2022 Place – they have an amazing selection of different beers. They make their own kombucha. They also make their own tofu, Sauerkraut and Kimchi, which you can purchase to take home.
Whether you’re vegan or not, 2022 Place should be on your list of must-try restaurants in Yerevan.
- Location: 2022 Place is located off Mashtots and Aram streets, in the pak of a few buildings. Find them here
- Check out their menu on their Instagram page
- Budget: $
- Vegan options only
2. Future Diner, for vegan junk food in Yerevan
Future Diner has taken the place of our beloved Soul Kitchen, on Mashtots Street. A vegan junk food restaurant with plenty of delicious meals to choose from.
We’ll be honest, our experience at Future Diner has been hit or miss. Though most of the misses are when we order in. For the best experience, we recommend you visit them at the restaurant.
Future Diner has everything to satisfy your junk food crazings – burgers, fried food, wraps, and more. They also have a wide selection of comfort food like pasta, sandwiches and more.
The guys who run Future Diner are super sweet. Every time we visit, they have a ton of recommendations for us. And they never steer us wrong.
We love their fried mushroom burger. Their appetizer dishes are delish. The animal fries as well. Honestly, if you order in-store, you can’t go wrong.
- Location: Future Diner is located on Mashtots street, just up a few stairs. Find them here
- Check out website for their menu
- Budget: $
- Vegan options only
4. Nest, a cute café in Yerevan serving vegan options
Hidden away in another pak, you have the recently opened Nest café. Another great addition to the vegan cuisine landscape of Yerevan.
Although the place is small, they offer quite a few vegan options, from delectable desserts to poke bowls. They also have plenty of alternative milks for your coffee order.
We really enjoyed the crunch bar, as well as the chocolate brownie and the energy balls.
A cute and relaxed spot to add to your Yerevan list for coffee and treats.
- Location: Nest is located in the pak of residential buildings. Find them here
- Check out Instagram page for their menu
- Budget: $
- Vegan options available
4. SweetLi, amazing vegan desserts delivered to you
SweetLi was a great discovery for us for vegan desserts in Yerevan. They used to have a storefront, but now, they offer pickup or delivery through the different food-ordering apps.
SweetLi offers a variety of desserts that are all vegan, natural, and without added sugar. Sounds too good to be true? It kind of is… until you see the price point!
This is our only gripe with SweetLi – Although it’s delicious, the 2500-3000+ AMD price point for small portions is a bit hard to swallow.
We understand the work and effort that goes into making these amazing dishes, but wish it could be done at a more reasonable price. However this didn’t stop us from ordering from her many, many, MANY times!
Her Snickers bar is amazing. So are the Honey Cake and the baklava (which is different than what you’re used to). Her brownie is more like a chocolate mousse, but still delicious.
At a lower price point (but smaller in size), Lillit offers balls – Ferrero, Snickers, Bounty and many more! She also makes her own nut butters and spreads.
If you’re looking to treat yourself to vegan desserts, you can’t go wrong with SweetLi.
- Location: SweetLi can be ordered through Yandex Eats or you can pick up your order. Find them here
- Check out Instagram page for their menu
- Budget: $$
- Vegan options only
5. Eat & Fit: Best vegan and vegetarian breakfast in Yerevan
We’re not sure we love the name of the restaurant, but we sure love their food! Whenever we told people in Armenia we were plant-based, they always recommended Eat & Fit, and we totally understood why as soon as we checked their menu out!
Not only do they have a ton of vegan and vegetarian options, but everything was simply delicious! Derek would always grab a protein shake after his workouts, and we would go in for a hearty breakfast when we were around!
Although the meals here are a bit on the pricey side, we didn’t mind, because everything we had was delicious! Plus, we always want to encourage restaurants that are non-smoking, and that promote a more plant-based menu!
- Location: The only Eat & Fit in Yerevan is at 80 Aram street
- Check out their Facebook page
- Budget: $$
- Vegetarian & vegan dishes available
Different cuisines to try in these 3 ethnic restaurants in Yerevan
Armenia’s population is quite homogenous. Around 95% of the population is ethnically Armenian. So it’s no surprise that the cuisine is similar. Eastern Armenian or Western Armenian/Middle Eastern.
So if you want to try something different, but still delicious, there are a few restaurants you can add to your list. They offer tasty meals, that are not Armenian!
1. Indian Mehak, amazing Indian food in the heart of Yerevan
Over the last few years, there has been an influx of Indian immigrants in Armenia. And we’re so happy to see them coming here. Not only for adding diversity to the landscape, but also, shaking up the food scene!
Indian Mehak is an amazing restaurant located on the busy Koruyn street. You know it’s good food because we often see Indians eating here!
This is another restaurant worth visiting with friends – it will allow you to try so many different meals. And, to be honest, you can’t really go wrong with any of their dishes.
We love ordering their appetizer platter with veggie cutlets, onion pakora and other delicious treats. Their samosas are excellent too. The aloo mutter, aloo gobi, butter paneer (or chicken), lentil dhal and tikka marsala are out of this world.
To be honest, we can keep the list going but we’d just name everything on their menu!
They have so many vegan options available, and can also make some of their vegetarian dishes vegan too.
The staff is friendly and attentive (some even speak Armenian). So if you’re looking to have some delicious Indian food, this is the only place in yerevan to add to your list!
- Location: Indian Mehak is located in the center of Yerevan. Find them here
- Check out website for their menu
- Budget: $$
- Plenty of vegetarian and vegan options available
2. Los Pueblos, a Mexican delight in Yerevan
Sometimes, you just crave Mexican food. Can you blame us? We spent 6 months traveling Mexico and we just can’t get enough of the food!
Luckily, 2 Los Pueblos locations in Yerevan can satisfy our cravings for tacos, burritos and guacamole!
We have visited both the Los Pueblos locations many times – for brunch or dinner, and we’ve loved them each time.
They have a delicious vegan burrito, or veggie fajitas that have the perfect amount of kick. Their guacamole is fresh (which is a rare thing in Yerevan). They also have this amazing salad with a toasted tortilla. Derek adored their cocktails and the birria burrito.
For delicious Mexican food, plenty of vegan options and a fun atmosphere, Los Pueblos has you covered.
- Location: There are 2 Los Pueblos locations – One near Cascade which has been temporarily closed and another just off Amiryan, next to Mayrig. Cascade Location. Amiryan Location.
- Check out website for their menu
- Budget: $$
- Plenty of vegetarian and vegan options available
3. Made in China, a delicious Asian food restaurant in Yerevan
This is another restaurant we discovered when looking for a change of cuisine. Unassuming, affordable and oh-so-yummy!
Made In China has all sorts of Asian food served in a generous portion (unlike other Asian restaurants we’ve tried in the city).
Some of our favorite dishes were the Pad Thai, the soba noodles or the chow mein with vegetables, the spring rolls, the fresh vegetable rolls and the pork bao bun.
Of all the Asian restaurants in Yerevan, Made in China became our top choice for the price, the quality and flavors of their dishes.
- Location: Made in China is centrally located near Opera. Check them out here.
- Check out Buy.am for their menu
- Budget: $$
- Plenty of vegetarian and vegan options available
4. Tumanyan Khinkali, a classic Georgian restaurant in Yerevan
For your Khinkali fix, Tumanyan Khinkali is the place to go! Centrally located on Tumanyan street, steps from the opera, this is where Yerevantsis go to have delicious khinkali.
Khinkali is a georgian dish. It’s basically a beautiful and large dumpling that’s filled with broth and usually a meat. It’s a pocket of deliciousness!
You can’t just cut into khinkali. You have to hold it by the doggy tail so the broth stays inside. You take a small bite and suck some of the juices. Only then, can you start eating the dumpling and its fillings. Usually, people don’t eat the top ‘knot’, but you can if you want to.
Tumanyan Khinkali specialises in this dish. They have the regular dough and fried variety. Both are delicious.
We highly recommend getting some salads and fresh herbs with your order – it can be quite heavy and filling to eat only dough, broth and meat.
Last time we went, we asked if they could make their mushroom khinkali vegan. It was not possible. So the only plant-based options here are their salads.
However, if you are looking for vegan khinkali, you can order them from Kolibri Foods.
For carnivores, this is a great place to have some delicious Georgian Khinkali.
- Location: Centrally located on Tumanyan street. Check them out here.
- Check out their website for their menu
- Budget: $$
- No vegan options available
3 amazing restaurants outside of Yerevan
We know that many will choose to go on day trips from Yerevan. If you’re spending 2 weeks, or even less in Armenia, then it’s worth getting out to explore the beauty of the country.
This is why we wanted to highlight 2 amazing restaurants we tried that are outside the city.
If you head out on a getaway from Yerevan, these are 2 delicious restaurants worth adding to your bucketlist.
1. Yasaman Lake Sevan, an amazing restaurant that transports you to the best seaside locations
Yasaman is a higher-end restaurant that has branches in Tsaghgadzor, Lake Sevan and Yerevan.
Surprisingly, we didn’t try the Yerevan location, but absolutely adored the one in Lake Sevan.
The first you’ll notice when you visit Yasaman Sevan is that its decor and beauty makes you feel like you’ve somehow left Armenia. You might feel like you’re in Greece or Italy.
The minimalist decor is stunning and almost every seat in the restaurant offers views of the majestic lake Sevan. Visiting the in the summer is best as their outdoor terrasse is open.
Now, for the food. Again, come with a group so you can relish all the different and delicious dishes. Make sure you try some of the local specialties like sea buckthorn (tea or lemonade) or one of their many fish platters.
We tried so many dishes, we lost count. The salmon with sea buckthorn sauce, the tabbouleh, eggplant rolls with tzatziki, Whitefish crudo… everything was delicious. They were even able to modify some of their dishes to make them vegan.
Overall, we loved the experience at Yasaman. From the service to the food to the decor, everything was simply perfect.
- Location: This restaurant is located on the shores of Sevan. Check them out here. But they have locations in Yerevan and Tsaghgadzor too.
- Check out their website for their menu
- Budget: $$$
- Vegan & vegetarian options available
2. Tsakhgunk Restaurant & Glkhadun, a treat to try outside of Yerevan
One of the first restaurants that was recommended to us was Tsakghunk for a road trip outside the city.
Located between Lake Sevan and Tsaghgadzor, this place is an absolute treat to discover. Especially considering it’s in the middle of nowhere, in some little village in Armenia.
This restaurant opened its doors recently and their whole ideaology is what drew us to this spot.
The restaurant’s mission is to shine a light on authentic rural Armenian food. They work with local farmers and producers to choose only the best, organic and seasonal goods.
They took over and transformed an abandoned canteen for Soviet workers, and the head house (Glkhadun) that were here. Today, they serve some of the best dishes in Armenia.
Since the dishes vary with the seasons, what we had might not be available when you go, but here are some of the dishes we loved.
The Sorrel with walnuts wrapped in sour lavash was an absolute treat. Unlike anything we’ve tried before! The spicy pepper dip with nuts was also delicious – traditional with a twist!
Carine had the vegan arishta on the menu – spicy and tasty. Armenian classics with a twist. Derek adored his Borani with mushrooms and cream.
After our meal, we were invited to check out the glkhadun or head house. This was the main house where a family lived in the 18th century. The house is largely left intact and you can see some of the artifacts from the past here.
All in all, this restaurant is well worth the detour. Head out of Yerevan and make sure you come here for a meal.
- Location: This restaurant is located in the middle of nowhere in Tsaghgunk. Find them here.
- Check out their website for their menu
- Budget: $$$
- Vegan & vegetarian options available
