As much as we love living in the city, sometimes, we just need a getaway from Montreal. Luckily, we’re located less than two hours away from stunning natural escapes. One of our favorite places to explore, regardless of the season, is the Eastern Townships. And luckily, there are a ton of amazing places to stay in the area so you can take full advantage of nature. Laö Cabines is one of those places. And best of all, it must probably be one of the most eco-friendly places to stay in the Eastern Townships, and in Quebec.

Discovering Laö Cabines, unique accommodations in the Eastern Townships
Located in the town of Racine, Laö Cabines is a unique set of cottages in the Eastern Townships. They are not the types of accommodations you’re used to seeing in Quebec. First, they are very eco-friendly. In fact, sustainability is a core value they put into everything they do on the property.
These cabins are designed with minimal decor, but with a truly sustainable glamping feel. Using only durable and local materials, each cabin is created to offer you a cozy experience that is fully immersed in nature. In fact, the micro-cabins feature large windows or rooftop windows to enjoy the amazing views of the natural surroundings. And if you want a real immersive experience in nature, Laö Cabines also has some basic campgrounds available on their land.
The immersive experience starts right as you get on site. At your arrival, you have the Welcome Cabin that also serves as a communal shower and a local shop. This is where you park your car for the entirety of your stay. There, you’ll be given a quick explanation about the surrounding lands and activities to do, how to get to your cabin, and all the details you need to enjoy your stay. You’ll also be given a sled or a wagon, depending on the season, to bring your things to your cabin in the woods. Such a fun and unique experience all around!
What to do at Laö Cabines
There is a ton to do at Laö Cabines, whether you’re here in the summer or the winter. Or, you can just choose to chill out. Because let us tell you, the cabins are super cozy, and the beds… Oh, the beds! The beds are insanely comfy! So grab a book, build a fire and just relax (the glass of wine is optional, but recommended!).
Laö Cabines are located near the future enlarged site of the Parc du Mont-Orford. You can go hiking or snowshoeing to see some of the highlights in the area. There is a beautiful viewpoint overlooking the grounds of Laö Cabines. There’s also a small cascade about 4km walking distance from the Welcome Cabin. Or, you can hang out by the Lac à Paul or Lac Braies. And if you don’t want to stray too far from the campgrounds, you can actually just walk around the Laö Cabines grounds. They have about 4km of trails that go through the grounds.
Laö Cabines also has 2 spas on site that you can relax in. Because of Covid restrictions, they were closed to visitors at the moment we visited, but they are very peaceful to enjoy. They’re located near the Welcome Cabin. Hopefully, they will be opened soon for everyone’s enjoyment.
During the winter months, you can grab one of the crazy carpets or saucers available to you at the Welcome Cabin. Walk around the grounds, find a hill and enjoy sliding. The best spot we found was right in front of the Welcome Cabin. Let us know if you find a better place!
In the summer, you can cool down at Lac à Paul, located on Laö Cabines grounds. The lake was named after the previous owner of the grounds. He built a barrage to flood the ground to make a beautiful lake. There, you can swim, relax on the dock, paddle-board or kayak. Don’t be surprised if you run into some furry friends either (mainly beavers)!
If you’re in the mood to relax, you can build a fire in your cabin, or in the outdoor fire pit. The cabins all come equipped with Adirondack chairs that you can chill out on. They also provide a hammock that you can prop up on two trees and wind down in.
The different types of cabins and accommodations at Laö Cabines
There are three different types of cabins available at Laö Cabines. They also offer different types of rustic accommodations, if you’re looking for a unique place to stay in the Eastern Townships.
- The Blök. There are 3 Blök cabins on the grounds of Laö Cabines. They all allow you to completely immerse yourself in nature. These cabins all come with large windows so you can enjoy the view. They’re perfect for 2 to 4 people.
- The Vü. There are also 2 Vü cabins to choose from. These cabins all boast windows on the ceiling so you can get an amazing view of the stars from your bed. They all have large windows as well, so you can enjoy the views of the landscape. They can house 2 to 6 people, depending on the Vü cabin you pick.
- Labsölu. There is one Labsölu cabin available. It’s basically a hotel room on wheels. In the summer months, it’s located in the forest. In the winter, they move it closer to the Welcome Cabin so you can access the bathroom more easily. It’s perfect for a couple looking to get away.
- RV camping. For those who have their home on wheels, or their camping RV, Laö Cabines offers RV sites where you can park your vehicle and enjoy the surrounding nature.
- Camping sites. If you’re a big fan of camping, Laö Cabines also offers rustic camping sites on their land.
The cabins are all equipped with a kitchen and sink so that you can prep your meals in comfort. They have a propane stovetop, pots, pans, utensils, plates, and everything else you need to make basic meals.
The team at Laö Cabines will send you an extensive list of what is included in your cabin, so you’ll know exactly what else you need to bring.
What to bring to Laö Cabines
As we mentioned, Laö Cabines are minimally equipped, although very comfortable and not really lacking in basic needs. However, there are a few things you need to bring with you to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. The team at Laö Cabines will be sending you an email with the list of things to bring, but here are the most notable ones:
- Your food. Although, you can order a local food basket while you’re there, to try some delicacies from the region.
- A cooler to keep your food in. The cabin doesn’t include a refrigerator.
- A flashlight or headlamp, to get around at night.
- Towels for your shower, and for the spa, if it’s open.
- Footwear: Flip flops, for the spa, if it’s open. Boots for hiking or snowshoeing in the winter. Hiking shoes for trekking in the summer months.
- Whatever else you need to relax and enjoy your stay.
An eco-friendly stay in the Eastern Townships
At this point, it should be no surprise that we’re huge fans of anything eco-friendly and sustainable. We love this planet way too much to ruin it. After all, how else can we truly promote travel, if it’s not in a way that respects nature and allows future generations to marvel at the beauty of our Earth. This is one of the main reasons we were so excited to find Laö Cabines. They take sustainability to a whole new level!
Here are some of the many things the team at Laö Cabines does to be eco-friendly:
- Every cabin is designed in a minimalist way, to create the least amount of waste as possible during the construction, but also, for your stay. Although the cabins are minimalistic, you don’t need to worry, because you have everything you need for a very comfortable stay.
- The cabins are on stilts so they have the least impact possible on the surrounding nature.
- The cabins were designed with durable materials, so they don’t need to be maintained very often.
- Solar panels power Laö Cabines’ cottages. Although they don’t have AC plugs to power your laptop or other electronics, they do have 2 USB plugs and lights.
- There is no running water in the cabin. Laö Cabines provides you with jugs of water for your cooking, cleaning, and showering needs. You also have running water at the Welcome Cabin, where they have a full bathroom and shower with running water.
- The bathroom wastes the least amount of water possible. You have a compost toilet in the cabin, as well as a camping shower, which is really a trip to use.
- They use eco-friendly cleaning products, that are also available for you in the cabin.
- They sell local products at the Welcome Cabin to support entrepreneurs from the area. While we were there, they were selling handmade soaps, masks, and art from local artists.
Staying in these eco-friendly cabins in the Eastern Townships made us realize how little we actually need to be happy (in life and travel), and how comfortable it is when you focus on what you have.
