We’re absolute suckers for unique accommodations. Especially spaces created by people who put a special spin on them and who truly have a passion for it. Enter Chalets Hygge, beautifully renovated cottages located in Domaine Cheribourg, in Orford, Quebec.

We discovered the set of Chalets Hygge cottages when looking for fun places to stay in the Eastern Townships. There are so many things to do in the area that you’ll appreciate staying overnight to soak it all in.

Discovering Chalets Hygge’s unique offering

Chalets Hygge are a set of cottages in Orford. To be exact, they are located in Domaine Cheribourg, a community of cottages steps away from the Mont-Orford National Park. The name Hygge comes from the Danish and Norwegian idea of creating a cozy and comfortable space that brings about a feeling of well-being. We can confidently say that the Chalets deliver on their promise of total and utter hygge!

The cottages at Domaine Cheribourg, and those of Chalets Hygge, all have that iconic orange roof. This orange roof is so quintessential of the Eastern Townships. Not sure if they’re in other parts of the province, but when we see them, we automatically think of this region.

Chalets Hygge, owned and operated by Kerri and Philippe, are a set of six beautifully renovated cottages. Varying between 750 and 1500 square feet of space, they have something for everyone looking to get away from the city. They accommodate 4 to 8 people per chalet, which is perfect when you want to bring the whole family. Including your pets! Yes, Chalets Hygge are pet-friendly, which is absolutely amazing! Because who wants to leave their furry friends at home?! Not us!

We had the pleasure of chatting with Kerri and Philip many times before we actually met them. It was love at first sight for us. We connected with them on so many levels, it was kind of weird, in a good way!

Kerri, an American from Florida, met Philip while they were working for the same corporation. Yup, that kind of corporate life and career that was a little too familiar to us

As things usually go in that fast-paced and grueling environment, they realized that they wanted to do something else with their lives. After a move to Vancouver and some back-and-forth, they decided to take a leap of faith and buy their first property in Domaine Cheribourg as a side project. And that’s how Chalet Hygge was first born.

The cottage side project quickly became an obsession. Kerri and Philippe went from owning and renting out that one chalet, to now owning 7 such cottages in Orford. It’s safe to say that they are now doing this full time, with such passion and happiness. It’s truly inspiring to see.

One of the first things we noticed when we met them is their absolute obsession with making each space unique, cozy and comfortable for their guests. They go above and beyond to make sure nothing is missing, and that your stay at their chalets is a memorable and relaxing one.

Staying at Chalets Hyyge’s newest edition, Chalet Denmark

We had the pleasure of being the first guests to stay at Chalet Denmark, the newest 2020 edition to the Chalets Hygge family. And if you plan on staying here, let us tell you, you’re in for a treat!

Chalet Denmark is a 1,500 square foot chalet in Orford, that can accommodate up to 8 people. There are 3 main bedrooms, one of which has hidden nooks with 2 twin beds for the kids. The place comes complete with 2 bathrooms, one being a powder room that also includes a washer and dryer.

The newly renovated Cheribourg chalet has been updated with taste and luxury. Not a single detail has been overlooked by Kerri and Philippe who undertook the renovations themselves, with some help from professionals for those trickier jobs! And let us tell you, the work they put in is absolutely beautiful.

There are two living rooms to choose from, which is perfect if you’re renting the chalet out for the whole family. One den is set in front of the TV, for those who want to Netflix and chill. Because yes, Netflix is included in the rental. While the other den is by the fireplace. It’s the perfect spot to curl up with a book and a cup of tea and to read in a cozy setting.

Because we were there in the winter, we didn’t have a chance to enjoy the outdoor space. We did note a large terrasse at the side of the chalet, equipped with a BBQ, that would be very handy in the warmer months.

The kitchen is cozy yet spacious, so you can easily cook without bumping into others. With an opening onto the rest of the cottage, you still feel like you’re part of the action while you’re cooking. They also didn’t overlook any of the amenities you may need to cook up a storm. The chalet comes equipped with a full kitchen and more appliances than you could need, from a coffee maker to fondue set, toaster, crockpot and so much more.

And if you don’t want to cook, that’s ok too! Kerri and Philippe will gladly share their restaurant recommendations with you, so you can enjoy a delicious family dinner without the pressure of cooking.

Things to do at Chalets Hygge, in Orford

Well, the first thing you should be doing is relaxing. After all, this is what the Hygge lifestyle is all about! To help you relax even more, you can also book some time and massages at the Nordic spa. It’s a short drive away from Chalets Hygge, in Magog.

If you want to enjoy the surrounding nature, you’re at the perfect place! Chalets Hygge allows you to rent their ebikes, so you can explore the area, without breaking your back. They have 3 ebikes for rent, including bike trailers for children. If you love biking, you’re in luck. There’s the famous Route Verte bike path, road cycling, and even mountain biking available in the area. If not, you can walk around Domaine Cheribourg, or go on some hikes in the area.

A stone’s throw away from Chalets Hygge, you will find the Mont-Orford National Park. It’s the perfect place to go for a hike, get a view of the Eastern Townships, or try some of the water activities in the summer. You can also go snowshoeing or skiing in the winter months.

To get a real taste of the local offering, you can drive the wine route and stop along the way for a tasting or two. We recommend having a designated driver so you can really enjoy the route. There are also many ciders made in the area, so make sure you try them out too! If beer is more of your thing, you can drive the microbrewery route instead. It’s a great way to support local businesses.

You can also drive to nearby towns and go for a walk in the main areas. Our favorite towns in the area are Sutton, Magog, Coaticook, and Bromont. These towns are picturesque and have a ton of little stores, restaurants, and boutiques to check out. Make sure you bring your mask along with you. And in the case of restaurants, at the time of publishing this article, only takeout is available. In-house seating is not open for obvious 2020 reasons.

There’s a ton more to do in the Eastern Townships, but we’ll keep that for another article!

Kerri and Philippe have really gone above and beyond what you can expect from a chalet, to offer you a comfortable and memorable stay. And if this hasn’t convinced you enough, we’re not sure what will!
