Chiang Mai is known for its insane amount of temples, being home to digital nomads, its laidback and easy-going vibe. But not many people know about the street art in Chiang Mai. Although walking around, you’re bound to find some awesome murals around every corner.
It’s no surprise then, that you would want to take your time and stroll through the Old City, with plenty of sights and sounds to take in. Oh, and the food. That delicious food. So grab a bite to eat and head off to see some awesome street art.
Where to find the street art in Chiang Mai
It’s quite easy to spot the street art around Chiang Mai. Most of them can be found around the Old City. This is the original walled city of Chiang Mai founded by King Mangrai in the late 13th century.
This is where you can find most of Chiang Mai’s important temples and other historical sites. It’s also one of the best places to see street art by local and national artists.
We thought that this was the perfect mix of old and new. To have all these historical sights around, and yet, to have this cool and vibrant street art scene as well.
We concentrated on the street art in the Old City in this post but know that this isn’t the only place to find some awesome murals. You’ll also be able to find them in other neighborhoods like Nimman, Eastern and Western Chiang Mai, and on the walls of the US consulate.
Street artists of Chiang Mai
There are a ton of artists that have murals up in Chiang Mai. Some of the known names are Alex Face, Bonus TMC and Bon. There are also great local artists like Sanchai, Mauy, Waris, and Kanaet, just to name a few.
And one thing that makes Chiang Mai’s street art special is how many of the murals are often collaborative efforts.
