Discover more about the Eastern Townships
Located at the foot of the US border, the Eastern Townships are an area in the south of Quebec. The area refers to a collection of small cities, towns, and villages nestled in nature in south-eastern Quebec. This is where many people from Montreal have their cottages, and we can totally understand why.
With the pristine nature in the area, including a ton of mountains, lakes, forests, fields, valleys, and more, this is the perfect place to escape from the city. It’s even more perfect because of the sheer natural beauty of the Eastern Townships. We promise you won’t be disappointed!
If you prefer to brush up on the history of the region, you’re also in luck. The Townships actually have strong a very rich history with English roots. In the late 18th century, Americans, British Loyalists, and Irish and Scottish settlers moved into the region and made it their home. Their influence is still felt today, especially in some of the more anglophone towns.
The 23 best things to do in the Eastern Townships
As we mentioned, with so many beautiful places, both cities, and natural parks and areas to explore, the Eastern Townships have something for everyone! Whether you choose to go in the summer or the winter, you will be amazed at everything the area has to offer.
1. Check out the national parks in the Eastern Townships
We weren’t kidding when we said that the area is rich in its natural landscape. It probably explains why there are four national parks in the area, each one more beautiful than the next. It’s also impressive to note that each one has something different to offer.
Explore Mont-Orford national park, the best thing to do in Orford
Mont-Orford National Park is a hiker’s paradise. If you want to explore this park right, you have to be a hike-lover. With a ton of beautiful vistas, it’s the best way to get the most breathtaking views of the region. Some of our favorite hikes are here, so we never worry about what to do in Orford!
If you really want to treat yourself, we highly recommend hiking the trails of the Mont-Orford national park in the fall. That’s when the forests of sugar maples put on their most colorful outfits. The views are seriously insane!
In the summer months, there are two beaches where you can relax. And in the winter months, the park is the perfect place to go cross-country skiing or snowshoeing.
Check out Yamaska national park
The Yamaska national park is where you can admire a valley typical of the Appalachian Lowlands. The best way to explore this park is on a bicycle or on foot. But, with the Réservoir Choinière, a 4.56-km2 expanse of water, you should also be including some boating activities.
In the winter months, the best thing to do in this park in the Eastern Townships is to strap on your snowshoes or cross-country skis. The trails here will not disappoint!
Gaze at the stars at Mont-Mégantic national park
This is a fan favorite for astronomy lovers like us! The Mont-Mégantic national park is probably the best national park in Quebec to star-gaze. With clear skies, the ASTROLab and astronomy observatories, you have everything you need to make each night perfect.
Of course, there are a ton of hikes to do here as well, in the summer or the winter, but they all take a back seat to the sheer beauty of the skies above.
Admire the flora and fauna at Frontenac national park
Located on the shores of the Grand lac St-François, the 3rd biggest lake south of the St. Lawrence River, the Frontenac national park is perfect for bird and animal lovers. This park is home to over 200 bird species and over 30 mammal species. It’s the perfect place to see them in their natural habitats.
It’s also a great place to go canoe camping, boating, hiking or biking. In the summer or the winter, it’s the perfect spot to get away from the city and immerse yourself in nature.
Looking for other amazing national parks? You can find our full article about the best national parks in Quebec here. They are super close to Montreal.
2. Go on a hike in the Eastern Townships
Yes, we just spoke about the national parks and each one has its own hiking trails, but there are so many others too! From our favorite hike of Mont Pinnacle to Mont Ham, Mont Gosford, the Marais de la rivière aux Cerises, the Coaticook Gorge, and more. There’s really something for every type of hiker. And best of all, some of these hikes are open year-round.
Again, if you want to see amazing fall foliage, then we highly recommend hitting the trails in the fall. But the summer and winter are great times to explore these hikes as well. In the winter, you will need to wear snowshoes or spiked shoes (or studs) to get through some of the trails, although some hikes are fine to do without them. If you avoid snow days or the days following heavy snowfall, you should be good.
If you want all the details about the hikes to do in the Eastern Townships, check out our full article here. You have all the information you need to enjoy these hikes to the fullest.
3. Check out the stars at Mont-Mégantic
We mentioned the national park of Mont-Mégantic earlier, but you don’t need to go to the national park to do the best star-gazing in Quebec. In fact, Mont-Mégantic was named the First International Darksky Reserve, so you know that you will be blown away by what you’ll see there!
In Mégantic, you will find the ASTROLab, one of Canada’s premier observatories. There, they have a ton of activities for everyone, from kids to adults. Although the current pandemic has hindered some of the things to do, there are still a few activities taking place.
4. Discover the wineries in the Eastern Townships on the Route des vins
The Eastern Townships is home to not only one, but to four different Wine Routes, or Route des vins, as we call them here. There are 20 different wineries that are part of those routes. You can go in for a wine tasting, check out their boutiques to get your fill, or even help with harvesting.
Quite a few of the wineries and vineyards are in Dunham, but there are some in other towns of the Eastern Townships as well. They’re sprinkled all over the Brome-Missisquoi region, which makes driving around even more fun.
Make sure you check out what safety measures are in place before going. You may also need to reserve ahead of time. Also, before you go, assign a designated driver for your group. Drunk driving is never an option.
5. Stomp on grapes to make your own wine at Domaine du Ridge, a unique activity in the Eastern Townships
We had never heard of a fouloir before, but we were so happy to discover this amazing event. Every year, at harvest, the Domaine du Ridge winery hosts a fouloir. This is a special event where women are invited to come stomp on grapes to make a special Fouloir edition of their wine.
Tradition says that women’s feet produce better wine than men… they apparently produce vinegar! Back in the day, the fouloir was held for virgin women only, who came to stomp on grapes to make the best wine. It was also an occasion for men to come see the women’s ankles, and maybe find a wife!
Today, the women-only tradition carries on. But there is no need to be a virgin! On harvest Saturdays, women are invited to come to the Domaine du Ridge to stomp on grapes. There, you can wash your feet and get into a large pool where men serve wine and fill the pool with grapes. The women dance and sine, drink wine and stomp on grapes. The juice is collected and then turned into wine that is sold only as the special Fouloir edition.
On other days, you can still come to visit the winery. They regularly host wine tastings of different sorts. They also offer tours of the winery and many other activities. One of our favorite things to do was to purchase a wine-tasting board, sit on one of their many picnic tables in the vineyards and enjoy it with friends.
Make sure you add a stop to the Domaine du Ridge on your wine route in the Eastern Townships. And if you’re around at the end of summer or early fall, the fouloir is a unique activity in the Eastern Townships that is well worth checking out!
6. Sip the best craft beers at local microbreweries
Just like the wineries, microbreweries in the Eastern Townships are making quite a splash (yes, pun intended!). If you prefer brews to wines, you’re quite in luck, because there are over 25 microbreweries to choose from on the Microbrewery route. From ales, pilsners, IPAs, and more, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
A lot of the microbreweries also have pubs where you can have a quick snack before heading out to enjoy the region. Again, make sure you have a designated driver with you.
7. Discover La Station de Compton, a sustainable cheese farm to visit in the Eastern Townships
It may seem weird to recommend going to a cheese farm when one of us is vegan, but having met the owner and the cows of this farm, we couldn’t recommend it enough!
La Station is a small family-run organic cheese farm located in Compton. Nestled in the mountains, this fine cheesemaker is setting the bar when it comes to organic cheese farming.
With about 45 cows that graze on their 1000-acre land, La Station does everything to make sure their cows are happy. Unlike industrial cheese farms, the cows here live very happy and comfortable lives. They don’t overproduce milk, and they even allow the calves to stay with their mothers. And happy cows make better cheese, so Derek was really happy to try their tasty variety!
You can visit their facilities and farm on a tour, or you can stop by their boutique to taste some of their award-winning cheeses and purchase them, or some of the other products they have. A must is their maple syrup which is also produced on the farm. They also sell different products from other local producers, with many vegan options. And you can enjoy a coffee while you’re there. Plus, we absolutely love that all their packaging is compostable.
We often preach about supporting local businesses that take care of their environment and sustainably produce their goods. La Station de Compton is one of those amazing examples that we can absolutely stand behind!
8. Bike or drive the scenic Chemin des Cantons
The Eastern Townships are absolutely beautiful, especially in the fall, when the leaves come to life with their beautiful colors. You can explore eight different regions of the Eastern Townships on the Route. There are also four themed routes to choose from, the Color Route which is best kept for the fall, The Historic Homes route, The English Tea Route, or the Round Barn and Covered Bridges Route. Either way, we’re confident you’ll have an amazing time driving or biking through the different routes.
Before you set out, make sure you check out the Route des Cantons website to see if there are any activities happening during your drive. This is by far the best way to discover a different side of the Eastern Townships.
9. Bike around on all the trails for a fun activity in the Eastern Townships
Whether you’re a fan of mountain biking, road biking, or fat biking in the winter, the Eastern Townships have you covered.
The Mont-Orford national park is home to some amazing mountain biking trails in the summer and winter. While the Townships themselves are a biker’s paradise. Here, you can cycle down many paths that either go around Lake Memphremagog or through the different towns in the area.
There are so many different routes you can take. The views will also vary from mountains, lakes, valleys, little towns and so much more. If you’re big on biking, you will love exploring the Eastern Townships on two wheels!
10. Discover the Diable Vert and enjoy the many activities there
The Diable Vert is one of those really cool places in the Eastern Townships where you can spend a day or a whole week and not get bored. They offer all sorts of different and cool eco-accommodations like sleeping in treehouses, pod cabins, rustic cabins, and more.
While you’re there, you can also ride a zipline bike, go tubing on the river, stand-up paddleboard, hike, kayak, track animals or visit the farm. And that’s only in the summer. There are many other activities to do at the Diable Vert in the winter, like hiking, snowshoeing, sledding, and more.
If you plan on going for the day, make sure it’s not a Saturday, as they don’t allow day visitors on that day. You can go during the day, from 10 am to 5 pm, between Sunday and Friday.
11. Check out the cute towns sprinkled throughout the Eastern Townships
We said it before, and we’ll say it again. Driving through the Eastern Townships is probably our favorite thing to do. The views you get are amazing, either driving on mountainous routes, or through picturesque little towns. Some notable towns are Sutton, North Hatley, Coaticook, Magog, Orford, Stanstead, and Saint-Benoit-du-Lac.
When we see a little town we like, we just stop the car and walk around the main streets. If there are cute shops or cafés open, we love taking a peek inside and see what they have to offer. We highly recommend you do the same. You won’t be disappointed.
12. In the winter months, go skating in a beautiful setting
In the winter, when the rivers and lakes freeze over, they create one of the most picturesque settings we’ve had the pleasure of seeing. And if you’re like us, and love to ice skate, this is the place for you!
The Sentier Glacé is a 2.8 km frozen path that goes through forests and along Memphrémagog Lake. There are 4 different routes to choose from. At night, the paths are lit up, making them even more magical. There’s also a chalet on either end of the path, where you can lace up and warm up. And best of all, this is a free activity to do.
13. Ski down the many slopes of the Eastern Townships
The Eastern Townships has an amazing offering of ski slopes to choose from. If you’re looking to make the best of your winter and want to hit the slopes, there are four major hills to choose from. The most popular ski destinations in the Eastern Townships are Owl’s Head, Mont-Orford, Bromont, and Sutton.
Weekends tend to get quite crowded on the hills, so if you want to enjoy the hills without the crowds, we recommend you head there on a weekday. Weeknights are also great to have the slopes almost to yourself. Regardless of when you go, make sure you bundle up. It gets quite cold and windy up on those hills.
14. Go up the chairlift at Owl’s Head to see the best of the fall foliage in Eastern Townships
We mentioned going skiing in the Eastern townships, but one of the best things you can do here in the fall is to head to Owl’s Head to head up the hill on a ski lift. You can also hike up the hill, but with the ski lift, you get to enjoy the view without exerting yourself!
During the 3 weeks when the leaves are in full swing, on weekends only, Owl’s Head opens its chairlifts up to anyone who wants to make the best of the small fall foliage window! Many of the other ski lifts offer the same activity, but Owl’s Head gives you a view of the lake and the surrounding mountains, something that not all peaks do.
The cost to go up and down the chairlift is $19. Once up top, you can walk around the hilltop and take the view in. A word of warning, however – it gets incredibly cold and windy on the peak, so make sure you bring a jacket.
At the foot of the hill, Owl’s Head hosts plenty of activities from live music to an arts and crafts fair, to pumpkin painting, face painting, and much more. It’s the perfect place to go with the family or with some friends and enjoy the colorful view.
15. In the summer months, enjoy the beautiful Lake Mémphremagog
We teased you with something fun to do on Lake Memphrémagog in the winter, but rest assured. You can have even more fun on the lake in the summer.
From chilling on the shores to swimming, paddle boarding, kayak, canoe, whatever, this is the best place to hang out on hot summer days. The water is super refreshing and the setting is just gorgeous!
16. Discover the beauty and wonder that is Foresta Lumina
Foresta Lumina is a magical experience. Walking along a path in the forest, you are brought into an enchanting story and beautiful setting. Trees are lit, animations are shown and a story unfolds as you walk through the path.
This is a night-time activity in the Eastern Townships that is perfect for families and anyone else. The season opens on June 18, 2021. It costs about $20 for adults and $11 for children. Make sure you check the schedule as it changes, depending on sundown, and tickets are required to get in.
17. Take some time to smell the… lavenders at Bleu Lavande
Bleu Lavande is a unique place where you can walk through beautiful lavender fields. They also have a boutique where you can purchase all sorts of lavender goodies.
Bleu Lavande recently moved. They’re now located in Magog, and that’s where you can visit their fields in the summer. However, the spaces at Bleu Lavande are open year-round. They have indoor and outdoor spaces, an immersive and interactive area that has been designed by Moment Factory.
18. Spend some time disconnecting at the Abbaye St-Benoit-du-lac
Finally, if you’re looking to disconnect because you’ve had just too much fun doing all these things in the Eastern Townships, head to the Abbaye St-Benoit-Du-Lac. Go for a day trip, or stay longer for a retreat.
On the grounds of the Abbaye, you can visit the church, hike the paths around it, check out their products (they have lovely cheeses, ciders, jams, and much more), or walk around their orchard. For a longer retreat, they have a guesthouse where they host visitors to be a part of the clerics’ days. Regardless of how long you go, we’re sure you’ll have an amazing time there.
19. Dine at Bistro Kóz for a delicious meal with an amazing view
Located in the heart of Magog, Bistro Kóz is right on the shore of Lake Memphremagog. This makes it the perfect place to relax with one of their signature cocktails, and to enjoy the view.
Fans of people-watching, sunset seekers and foodies alike will adore this Mediterranean restaurant. The dishes they offer are inspired by Greece, Georgia, Turkey and Lebanon. As lovers of Middle Eastern cuisine, we absolutely adored our food here, mainly because you can (and should) share your dishes.
The menu is divided into an à la carte section and a tasting menu. We opted to go à la carte so we can pick more vegan options. And we were so delighted with everything we got. From the colorful and tasty baba ghanouj, to the decomposed Greek salad, the falafel tajine, the lamb kebab cooked to perfection and the parmesan french fries. Everything was so tasty and delicious. And we were very happy with the
The staff was extremely attentive, finding options to accommodate Carine (the vegan), although the menu does have a fair share of plant-based meals. The decor transported us back to Greece. The ambiance is lively and electrifying – you really feel like you can forget your worries at the door and enjoy an evening of fine dining. It was such a delight eating here!
What also makes Bistro Kóz so enjoyable is the immense two-story terrasse. On hot summer days, make sure you reserve a table outside. You have a perfect view of Lake Memphremagog, and can even peek at the sunset. And if you’re lucky, you may even catch a rainbow or two!
Make sure you add this restaurant to your bucketlist in the Eastern Townships. You won’t regret it! It’s one of the best places to eat in Magog.
20. Relax at Strom spa nordique in Sherbrooke
After all this exploring, why not take a few hours and head to the Strom Spa Nordique in Sherbrooke. Located on the water with a floating dock where you can relax, this spa is the perfect place to unwind.
This outdoor-indoor spa offers a thermal experience where you can go through various circuits of hot, cold and relaxation. With many pools and saunas to choose from, as well as plenty of seating and chilling options, Strom has something for everyone.
You can also enjoy a relaxing or therapeutic massage from one of their skilled masseuses, or get pampered with one of their aesthetic treatments. Or, you can take a break and at their Café Fika, where they offer plenty of different dishes to keep you going. Basically, they have everything you need here to treat yo’self!
If you’re looking to disconnect and enjoy a few hours reconnecting to nature and refilling your cup, this is the place to do it. The Strom Spa Nordique in Sherbrooke is a must when you’re in the Eastern Townships.
21. Get a taste of Indigenous culture in Piopolis
Located in Piopolis, you will find one of the best places in the Eastern Townships to experience Indigenous culture and reconnection to nature. Nestled in the woods, between the majestic mountains, and in the heart of the Dark Sky Reserve, you have the unique accommodations of Hébergement aux Cinq Sens.
This place is like nowhere else we’ve experienced. Beyond the different types of places to stay that they offer, the team at Hébergement aux Cinq Sens will take you on a journey to help you reconnect with nature and find peace and beauty within their lands. In fact, they do offer very unique accommodations – from tiny homes to hanging hammock tents and yourtes. But that’s not what makes this place so special.
Paule and Benoit, the owners of Hébergement aux Cinq Sens are some of the kindest and most authentic people you will meet. From the moment they greet you to the moment you leave, they make you feel welcomed and special. They host a talk with all their guests, where you can reconnect with the spirit of the forest. Since you’ll be staying in rustic accommodations, with no running water or electricity, understanding nature and our connection to it becomes super important. Plus, on starry nights, you’ll also be able to have a special presentation by Benoit who is super knowledgeable.
As for experiencing the culture and tradition of the First Nations, Hébergement aux Cinq Sens is part of Indigenous Tourism Quebec, since Paule is from the Huron-Wendat tribe. They put forward a lot of the values that respect nature, at the heart of the culture of Indigenous Nations. On-site, you will find a wishing tree, similar to what many First Nations traditions are. The respect they show nature and the elements is also very much aligned with their ways. Paule also hosts a ‘march of the nomads’ hike where she teaches how to breathe properly during strenuous activities. Finally, Benoit also partakes in these activities – he hosts the walk in the forest, playing his flute or drum. Plus, you can find many products created by First Nations’ artists sold in the store at Hébergement aux Cinq Sens.
This is a beautiful place to discover if you’re exploring the Eastern Townships, especially if you’re looking to reconnect with nature, or if you want to dig a little deeper into the authentic experiences of the First Nations.
22. Hang out with some alpacas at Alpagas Sutton, one of the most unique activities in the Eastern Townships
There’s so much to do in the Eastern Townships in the summer or in the fall, but one of our most recent discoveries made it to the top of the list! We highly recommend a stop at Alpagas Sutton. This family-run business is an absolute must, for animal lovers, families and couples alike.
Located on a lovely piece of land, nestled in the mountains, close to a marsh, Alpagas Sutton is a farm for alpacas. They have about 35 alpacas you can admire in their enclosures. They also host guided tours (when available) where you can get a closer look at the furry fluffy animals.
The entrance fee allows you to walk around the enclosure, petting alpacas who are sometimes very curious. You can also walk around the many hiking trails they have available around the grounds.
There’s also a boutique where you can buy some of the beautiful pieces they create with the wool from the alpacas. Be warned – the pieces are all so lovely and so soft to the touch. And, best of all, most pieces are handmade by the owner’s mother.
Visiting the farm and talking with Genevieve, the owner who will likely greet you at the entrance, you really feel the love and passion they have for taking care of these alpacas. Each one has a name, a personality and little ways that they know and appreciate. This is why we love encouraging small local and family-run businesses. And Alpagas Sutton is a true reference when it comes to animal farms.
Alpagas Sutton is open every day in the summer, and on weekends in the fall.
23. Go on a dinner cruise with Escapades Memphremagog
Another amazing summer activity to do in the Eastern Townships that carries on to the early autumn weeks is a dinner cruise offered by Escapades Memphremagog. They have a few different options depending on the time you have available for the cruise.
We opted for the 3.5-hour long dinner cruise that includes a 3-course meal and a welcome drink. It did not disappoint. You’re greeted on board with a welcome cocktail and take a seat at your table. Most tables are next to a window, which gives you a lovely view during the journey.
About 30 minutes after boarding, the boat takes off and starts its venture around the lake. You’ll see a ton of lovely homes on the waterfront, and you’ll also be able to enjoy the sunset. The band on the boat, a couple with the wife who sings and husband on keyboards will serenade you all night long and even get you singing along!
Each course is served about one hour apart, which gives you ample time to go on the outside deck and enjoy the view. We went on the cruise in the early fall, when the sun set a bit earlier, so most of the ride was done in the dark, but it’s still lovely to go outside and look at the stars while floating on the water.
Before your journey with Escapades Memphremagog, you’ll need to choose your meal. You’ll have the choice of a salad to start, a main course and dessert. We were so pleased to discover that they offered vegan meal choices aboard. And the choices of drinks available are astonishing as well. Their cocktails are not to be missed!
We loved our dinner cruise – it was a first for us doing this type of activity! The food was great, the views were breathtaking and we absolutely adored the entertainment.

I think this would be nice for my group.
We’re sure they would love it! There is so much to do in the Eastern Townships!
The best guide I have seen for this area, including those put out by the province and townships. For Louis Penny fans, author of Three Pines book and television series, there is a route of inspirational sites, https://www.easterntownships.org/tourist-routes/12/three-pines-inspirations-map-louise-penny
Thank you so much! We really appreciate your kind words! And thanks for the extra tip
These suggestions are wonderful but it would be even better if there was a map that showed where these places are so one could make a travel plan.
Hi Susan! That’s a great idea! We’ll incorporate that in the article. Hope you enjoy your time in the Townships!
